First, I'm obviously doing something wrong with the search engine, because all of my search results are either completely negative or contain tons of obviously unrelated posts. Sorry if the answer is clearly under my nose.
I finally had the luck of getting a Praetorian XXIV box set, so I can finally start the one IG army I've ever been excited about. However, I love tanks, and don't much care for painting tons of similar guardsmen (though painting one or two of each is fine). Thus, I'm doing a Praetorian Armored Company, the "Ironsides". I've read the last three editions of the Imperial Guard Codex, as well as every Black Library book published in the last 10 years. However, I haven't gotten my hands on many of the Imperial Armor Books (just the first few). Thus, I have a few 'organizational' questions that might be unanswerable, or they might just be in something I haven't gotten my hands on yet.
For the Praetorian Imperial Guard, is there any reason why an Armor Regiment would not exist?
Of course, this will be an Armored Company, but as I understand it, you can have an Armored Company which descends from a parent Regiment which is not entirely Armor, as well as having a Company from an Armor Regiment.
The plan is to basically buy and put together a minimal legal army of Guardsmen, and then buy and paint the tanks I am interested in until I get tired of tanks. I'm not trying to create an optimized army, but a legal army that will let me indulge my interest in Tanks without making me paint stuff I'm not interested in. Thus, two squads of Veterans in Chimeras, a Command Squad in a Chimera (all three Hull Weapon varients), three Hell Hound variants (Bane Wolf, Devil Dog), and seven Leman Russ (all seven variants). I might add sentinels or not, but that is a LONG way away. I would like the Chimera mounted Veterans to be from the same Company and Regiment as the rest of the force, if that is fitting in the background, rather than having the Armor from one Company and the Veterans from another.
Are there any specific guidelines for Armored Company organization (not in the rules, but in the background)?
For instance, is there some requirement that a company command tank exist, rather than having a company commander in a regular squad with a Chimera?
Are there any specific guidelines for squadron organization within the Armored Company itself in the background?
I'm wondering if there are any particular (or even very common) guidelines for marking the vehicles of the Company, and distinguishing the squadrons within that Company? I've seen the examples in the books and on the web site (under the Emperor's Fist Tank Company article), but I'm wondering if there's any "hard and fast" rules on this, or can every gamer use his own organizational (and paint) scheme.
There might be no "right" answer to these questions. I'm really asking them to make sure that there's no WRONG answer (which is probably the one I would select at random).
