Hi,

This came up at a game last weekend and I couldn't find anything when I searched the forum for this so I'll go ahead and ask it, again(?).

How do you position the tear drop template when firing a flamer from a fire point on a transport, or any flamer, for that matter.

The rules says that you're technically unable to use them as you cannot place them without covering at least a portion of the transport, but what gives? Do you ignore that and just place the template from the fire point or do you allow for free placement anywhere, in any direction from the vehicle?

I feel that the 'best' option is to place it as normal from the weapon/firepoint and just go from there because allowing free placement seems a little bit too good.

Any suggestions or clarifications are welcome.

Thanks.

Edit: Added poll

RAW you can't use them.

However, most people will allow you to use them from a firing point, provided the vehicle has it (or is open topped ).

There are a lot of issues like this. Basically just check with your opponent before the game to make sure.

Armies | Orks (2000 - Magna-Waaagh!) - | Blood Angels (1500 - Sylvania Company) - | Dark Eldar - (1500 - Kabal of the Golden Sorrow) - | Salamanders (1000 - Vulkan Ravens) - | Chaos (1500 - Wisdom and Wrath) -

By a strict reading of the rules, flamers cannot be fired from fire points.

What I play by, and what I've seen in almost all games I haven't played in: The flame template is placed from the fire point. Any effect from the vehicle is ignored. I have seen people play that the vehicle is actually hit by the flame template, but most of the time, it isn't.

Yeah, maybe I should make a poll on how people play it, since we usually go with what dakka says in general and what comes up in YMDC in particular...

You can fire them from Open Topped Transports just fine, since you place the end at any point of the hull.

But from fire points from Chimeras and Rhinos, no go I am afraid. Sucks, yes, but them's the breaks sadly.

I'm pretty sure 99% of all people will allow it outside of a tournament setting.

In a tourney, it's up to your tourney organizer to make the call. And that is a different call in each instance.

Edit: I was about to say what GWAR said - if it's open topped, you can make it so the end of the template isn't "over" the hull. Open topped vehicles would have no issue in any circumstance. It's things like Rhinos that are unclear.

Your poll options are very screwy, since none of them actually cover what happens.

RaW:
Closed Topped transports are a no-go, since the fire points are always recessed slightly.

Open-Topped can fire them just fine from the hull.

Under the couch

It's fairly painfully obvious that you're supposed to be able to fire templates from vehicles, since the rules tell you how to do it. The technicality that stops it from working is pretty universally regarded as an oversight, and is treated as such in my own games.

Yeah, I know RAW disallows it, but I didn't want the option 'can't fire at all', mostly because I don't think that's how people play it.

Perhaps that was an oversight on my part and a lot of people actually disallows it, but they should go for the 'other' option and if it turns out that a lot of people chooses that I'll have to make another poll, or make a decision based on something else.

Thanks for commenting.

Baal Predators armed with a Flamestorm cannon use it, as it clips the vehicle model.

Sad, but true with RAW.

Seriously people? RAW is all well and good until it's used as an excuse for being deliberately obtuse. Fire the friggin' flamer. You are already suffering a reduction in that no enemy model can be under the part that crosses your transport's hull. So it's not exactly a free pass to a game breaking advantage is it? You're all capable of accepting that a unit receives cover from a "wall" that barely reaches their knees but the concept of arcing the stream of napalm over the meter or two of tank hull is beyond you? And the crap about the Baal Predator not being able to fire the main gun forward because it's template might overlap the front hull by a mm or so is the kind of thing that will get you branded a complete -head. Use the rules to PLAY the game. Don't try and use them to screw it up for the rest of us.

Fixed position models and hard plastic templates force you to use common sense. Like it or not. /
