Guys -

I am making a 40 K table (i've already got some of the terrain. Here's the rub: I'd l;ike to make "Side A" a dence Cities of Death table, and "Side B", the bottom, a more open ares so armor can get involved.

Has anyone ever done anything like this? And am I insane???

Might be unbalanced games wise, depends on army though.

The open area could be the remnants of a major highway, but bigger.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

My enterpretation was not one end of board as "A", and the other as "B", but the top as one and the bottom as the other.

Not insane. It's smart actually to make the board twice as useable. I've seen a board made where the legs and connected to a "frame" on top. The frame had cross-bracing and the tabletop itself was "loose" and laid in the frame. It could be taken out, flipped over and you're playing on a different field. It would have to be a snug fit, with good bracing to hold the board from moving, but do-able.

That was what I'd understood from this as well, one side as a city which can be flipped over to a more open board.

Thats What I'm doing on my board. I have one side thats painted & textured as a desert & the other is grey. I don't build the scenery onto the board so I can flip it easy & change the layout. I can get 4 different terrain sets out of this setup. I've got the desert & cityfight, then I have rocky terrain with Ice & snow I'm working on that goes well on the grey side or I can throw down a green battlemat and use woodland terrain.

Eagles may soar free & proud, but weasles never get sucked into jet engines.

This is easy to do and pretty cool.

I have a 4x8 in my garage that is red desert planet on one side and green forest planet on the other. Flip when necessary.

This is an awesome idea. I'm definately going to do this with the sheet of MDF I just bought but I have a queastion to people who have these already...
did you put sand on the desert side? if so, does it rub off? and also how does the board stay on without moving?

I used straight 4 by 8 sheet of 1/2 plywood. Bboth sides are textured. We try not to drag it when moving it and lay it against a wall when not in use. Works pretty well.

Oh and the paint/ texture is straight on te wood. Pink foam would take a lot more damage when moved and flipped though.

We actually use a old kitchen table that sits in my garage (about 3 by 4) for one end and a shop vise/bench thing for the other. We just pull out the two supports, arrange them and then put the 4x8 on top when we want to play. I have a shelf of terrain that we made from foam, cardboard and found items.

Here's some pics from my gallery where you can see what the table looks like. This is red planet side up.

It is nothing special, but works great for home games.

I love the hexagon scenery looks like the planet was inhabited by bees.

I feel dumb for not thinking this before.

Heh the hex scenery is from Heroscape, I believe.

It makes really convenient craters for wrecked vehicles and other terrain pieces that minis stand well on.

To make a durable sand surface, prepare the table, then spray it grey or sand colour.

Brush a good layer of PVA adhesive onto the table, and chuck your course sand onto it. When dry, tap off the excess.

Now paint over the sand with a 50/50 PVA/water mix. It will dry damned hard.

Anything can be broken with enough abuse. Your main problem with a flat sand table made by my method is that it will be like a sheet of coarse sandpaper on whatever you put it down on.

Heroscape is a mini game from Mattel or Hasbro. Just went out of production though, so you would have to find them on the secondary market.
