Ok, in a nut shell the Comet is cast at a point on the table top, and you put a little counter there and it starts at 1 (2 if you paid extra to cast.) It can't be dispelled after that point. Then at the beginning of each magic phase, you roll a d6 and on a 1-3 it gets another counter, and on a 4+ the comet smacks the table and damages stuff around it.

Just to clarify a few points:

1: Does the spell then go away after it does damage? Or does it keep doing damage every turn you roll a 4+? I am thinking the former, but it doesn't actually say so, so I might well be wrong.
2: Does the spell end when the caster dies? It isn't a "Remains in Play" spell, so I am guessing nothing happens until it goes off.

Thanks for your input!

1) The spell ends when the comet lands.
2) The spell does not end when the caster dies. It is not remains in play- once that comet has been called, it's coming down...

“It was in lands of the Chi-An where she finally ran him to ground. There she kissed him deeply as he lay dying, and so stole from him his last, agonized breath.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”

Excellent, thank you sir!
What got me thinking about it was Salvage's battle report where he nuked his own DP by moving too close to his own comet. He didn't mention that just happened to be when the thing landed, though I might have missed it, and I thought maybe I misunderstood the spell and it just kept doing damage as long as you rolled for it.

To add another bit of hilarity to that self-cometing fiasco, I actually mused to myself earlier in that game how comet was one of the few spells out there that could be used to hurt friendly troops (skaven & slaanesh magic having a couple too). If I learned anything from that comet - besides to pay better attention and not get caught up in a wave of "OMG DP R THE SHITZ" - it's probably that I'll never cast comet again if given the choice. Even assuming a fairly static opponent - gunline being the best example - I myself am such an aggressive player, with such bizarre luck, that the chance of the comet holding off until my boys are under it is too good.

Side comment: I'm happy the comet is no longer a RiP spell, makes it much more effective (both in game and in a fluff perspective). Sadly it does mean it can't be turned off when no longer needed

Hehe yea I gotta say, nothing says "Salvage dice" like going numerous magic phases without the spell kicking off only to have it land right after you put the casting character right under it

Come to think of it, since Comet is not a RIP spell, can you cast multiple copies of it? If that's the case, you could really screw with an opponent's set up by casting 2-3 on their side of the board. That would REALLY hose up gun lines and other armies that don't necessarily want to let Chaos get into melee sooner rather than later.
