So... Assassination Runs.
Strakov Heavenly Piercing Spear.
Gatecrashing eCaine.
Molik Missile.
Boundless/Windrushed Sorcha.
Ryhas, Tide of Blood, Scythian teleport lols.
Ravyn, snipe, feat, go.
etc.
etc.

It doesn't have to be a caster, but just be assassination runs of whatever.

There are ways around them.
Medium Bases to stop trampling through.
Using bases to actually prevent placing to be in range.
Block with Terrain/Cover/Screen/Clouds.
Etc.

But what about those assassination runs where you are suggested:
"Just say XY inches away from them."

How viable is this? That is assuming you have objectives and stuff like that?
What do you do if you can't? Counter Assassination? Hope that the A. Run fails?
How often does this occur?

Surely keeping in mind threat ranges is important, but there just seems to be alot of far reaching things... they keep you away and keep you less effective maybe. I guess one solution is to have an army that can operate independent of the caster if need be.

I'm having a boring day, and that line just came up in my mind and I'd thought to ask some opinions.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

Another great type of assassination attempt is the leap frog or double toss. Basically you throw your nimble assassin over their lines so that he lands on his feet behind their caster and then makes his assassin run. Or for the double toss you throw your own guy over their defensive line and then he throws their caster back into the bulk of your army where you proceed to destroy him with everything you have left.

That only works with the Gatorman Wrassler's animus of which i have heard is changing.

Throwing your own model will knock it down, if your knocked down during your turn, you cant activate. If your immune to knockdown you still have to forfeit movement or action.

K, I've seen this mentioned multiple times now.

WTF is "Strakov Heavenly Piercing Spear"?

No-one I know plays him, and I don't hang out in the Khador part of the big boards so bear with me.

Superiority + Feat + Overrun. It can be used on a Spriggna (hence spear), but is more commonly applied to beast 09 (change name to Axe)

Superiorty jack giving it +2 SPD, Strakhov casts overrun on himself and shoots something causing the jack to walk 6", then he feats and the jack charges 13" with reach. Total threat range = 21"

Heh, Skrulnik, your rank is that of a Satyxis Raider...how's the rack .

On track, I guess my question is... how often is this defense used?
How detrimental to the rest of the army/mission is it?
________________

For the Spriggan case.
-It has Bulldoze, it is long reach, if it has to it can elect to trample instead of charge.
What do you do?
"Well, stay >21" away"

Small base models can't prevent a trample.
It has enough ARM to take a Freestrike or two.
Medium and large based models can be bulldozed away I believe.

Options: kill the Spriggan.
Or, prevent charge by modifying with a speed debuff.
Or, knocking it down.
But these are 'offensive' actions...are there any 'defensive' actions besides staying away and trying to cause more freestrikes to hopefully cripple movement?

Bulldoze can be trickier than that, though.

When you advance the warjack, the direction the model gets pushed is directly
away from the Spriggan. Sometimes that will put the model directly in your path further
down, or it will bump into another model behind it, leaving little to no room for the
Spriggan to sneak past.

wasn't it

"UNLEASH THE BEAST !" a truly appropriate name

"stay away x inches from caster/killer"
is NEVER a valid scenario

there are probably some prevention available here and there

Shoot it with eEiryss, you drop Superiorty and Disrupt at the same time and even with the +2 DEF from superirity, she just needs a 3 to hit. Then just throw something in front of the Spriggan so it can't hit Eiryss with a flare, rinse and repeat (this will annoy a Strakhov player really badly)

So what do you do when your opponent is smart enough to get rid of eEryss, most experienced players just don't let her hang around and shoot stuff all game.

How about the factions without that whor merc?

Mostly for me, its identifying which models are key to the strategy and taking them out.
You only have to stay away long enough to take out the linch-pin.
The best part of most of these common runs is that if you know about them, you can have a plan to deal with them.
They are not instant-win buttons. Though Molik Karn is damn close.

So if I saw this, now that I know what it is, I would probably get close enough to catch the Spriggan/Beast in her Ctrl and then Feat, and Crippling Grasp the bastard.
Odds are good that I could get most of his BG as well.
If I can't risk getting the Feat, I should have ArcNodes available to drop CG.
Other options are to run something to engage, and position it well.
With this done, get something in position to take it out next turn.

Heh, Skrulnik, your rank is that of a Satyxis Raider...

Yeah, I used to be Bane Lord Tartar Sauce, but the Dakka rank track has Satyxis Raider above him. O_o

It's not a question of intelligence of your opponent, she threats 19" and has Stealth, keeping a large base model from getting shot especially when you're trying to use it as a win condition (i.s. usually near the front of the force to keep from getting traffic jammed) doesn't work.

OK but you say rinse and repeat, meaning do it turn after turn. What do you do when you can't do it turn after turn?

To be clear, the point is not to hold off the assassination indefinitely, but just until you can get your own off or get in something to shut the jack down permanently, so it usually isn't more than 2 turn dance. If you don't have Eiryss, use medium/large bases to prevent trample, or put a unit in a way that he doesn't want to trample through i.e. reach weapon masters.

Yeah, if you play on a pool table you are doing it wrong.

Scenarios and terrain really help balance out some of the stupid-good combos in the game.

I would be interested to see what the tables they play-test on look like for terrain density.
