Subject: Keith Olbermann Suspended From MSNBC

A news anchor gets suspended from his news organization for political contributions. What a world. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/olbermann-sidelined-msnbc-making-political-contributions/story?id=12069567 MSNBC has suspended anchor Keith Olbermann, after it was revealed the "Countdown" host made political contributions to three Democratic candidates. Politico reported Friday that Olbermann contributed to the candidates in the run-up to Tuesday's midterm elections, making a donation to Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva on the same day he appeared on the cable news show. In a statement, MSNBC said its ethics policy bans journalists from making political contributions. Olbermann, perhaps the cable network's most famous face, is known as an outspoken liberal commenter. As one of the network's highest-paid personalities, he is central to the network's "Lean Forward" campaign, a rebranding effort promoting progressive points of view. "I became aware of Keith's political contributions late last night," MSNBC President Phil Griffin, said in a statement. "Mindful of NBC News policy and standards, I have suspended him indefinitely without pay." Olbermann admitted to making contributions to Grijalva, as well as Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D- Ariz., and Jack Conway, the Democratic candidate who lost to Tea Party favorite Rand Paul in the Kentucky Senate race. Olbermann told Politico he made the maximum contribution of $2,400 to each candidate. "One week ago, on the night of Thursday, October 28 2010, after a discussion with a friend about the state of politics in Arizona, I donated $2,400 each to the reelection campaigns of Democratic Representatives Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords," Olbermann told Politico. "I also donated the same amount to the campaign of Democratic Senatorial candidate Jack Conway in Kentucky." "I did not privately or publicly encourage anyone else to donate to these campaigns, nor to any others in this election or any previous ones, nor have I previously donated to any political campaign at any level," Olbermann said. A spokesman for MSNBC said neither Olbermann nor the network would comment beyond the statement he gave Politico. Others at the network seem to be lining up in support of the embattled host. Chris Hayes, an MSNBC contributor who often fills in for Olbermann, tweeted: "I'm not filling in on Countdown tonight because I didn't feel comfortable doing it given the circumstances." Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., also jumped to Olbermann's defense. "It is outrageous that General Electric/MSNBC would suspend Keith Olbermann for exercising his constitutional rights to contribute to a candidate of his choice. This is a real threat to political discourse in America and will have a chilling impact on every commentator for MSNBC," Sanders said in a statement. "At a time when the ownership of Fox news contributed millions of dollars to the Republican Party, when a number of Fox commentators are using the network as a launching pad for their presidential campaigns and are raising money right off the air, it is absolutely unacceptable that MSNBC suspended one of the most popular progressive commentators in the country." Olbermann said he contributed to Grijalva's campaign on Oct. 28, the same day the Democrat appeared on Countdown. Grijalva is opposed to Arizona's tough new anti-immigration law and risked his seat in Congress when he supported a boycott of the state.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/7951318/Rupert-Murdoch-donates-1m-to-Republican-party.html
Rupert Murdoch has donated $1 million to the Republican party, more than doubling its fundraising in the second quarter of the year and giving a boost to candidates in the November mid-term elections.
I fail to see quite what the reporter did that was wrong, in a world where a media mogul can direct his entire network into serving one political party and attacking the other.
It's small potatoes frankly.

I've heard that MSNBC's bigshots were looking to get rid of him, and needed to wait for a breech of contract to do it.
That sounds a lot more likely than him having been fired for some sort of ethical reason.

As best as I can tell, all major news stations in the US say they're politically unbiased; however, MSNBC, like Fox, doesn't actually put that much effort into maintaining this. It's pretty commonly accepted that they swing to the left and that Fox swings to the right. In this regard, I don't see firing Olbermann for this as having anything to do with PR. If his show was getting good ratings I doubt anyone would have cared.

I thought his show was getting good ratings?
The impression I get from what I've read on the guy is that he's an intolerable person. It may be that it's simply a matter of personal conflicts that is causing MSNBC to burn him like this. Granted, it's a policy they have there, but these things get forgotten for the right people.
I think that even people who agree with him politically find him to be really unlikeable.

1. Keith and the others were not bouned to ethics rules for a few years.
2.Joe Scarbough, the right leaning MSNBC commentator has been donating to republicans for years, and yet he still has his job.
3.MSNBC and NBC was just bought out by A right leaning Bush supporting group.

Earlier today, MSNBC declared that it would be suspending progressive host Keith Olbermann because he violated NBC’s ethics rules by donating to three Democratic candidates for Congress. As many bloggers have noted, conservative MSNBC host Joe Scarborough has donated to Republican candidates for Congress while promoting the same candidate on air, but has never been disciplined. Moreover, Gawker notes that MSNBC has been exempt from the formal NBC ethics rules for years. It is still a mystery why MSNBC selectively applied NBC’s ethics rules to Olbermann. However, it important to realize that MSNBC has undergone a fundamental change in leadership in the last two months.
Late last year, Comcast — the nation’s largest cable provider and second largest Internet service provider — inked a deal taking over NBC Universal, the parent company of MSNBC. Comcast moved swiftly to reshuffle MSNBC’s top staff. On September 26th of this year, Comcast announced perhaps the most dramatic shift, replacing longtime MSNBC chief Jeff Zucker with Comcast executive Steve Burke [Updated: The shift from Zucker to Burke has not taken place yet -- Burke will preside over MSNBC once the Comcast merger is complete. We have been informed that no Comcast officials are currently involved in the decisions of NBC or MSNBC.]. Burke has given generous amounts to both parties — providing cash to outgoing Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) as well as to Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) and other top Republicans. But as Public Citizen has noted, Burke has deep ties to the Republican Party. Public Citizen’s report reveals that Burke served as a key fundraiser to President George Bush, and even served on Bush’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology:
Comcast – the country’s largest provider of cable TV and broadband Internet services – has increased its political giving along with its mergers and acquisitions. CEO Brian Roberts was a co-chairman of the host committee at the 2000 Republican Convention. Comcast Cable President Stephen Burke has raised at least $200,000 for Bush’s re-election campaign. [...] Comcast’s political giving has increased along with its mergers and acquisitions. The company was a “platinum sponsor” at the 2000 GOP convention, and Roberts was a co-chairman of the host committee at the Philadelphia event. Burke was appointed to the President’s Council of Advisers on Science and Technology in 2002.
Why would Comcast be interested in silencing progressive voices? Historically, Comcast has boosted its profits by buying up various telecommunication and media content companies — instead of providing faster Internet or better services (overall, American broadband services are far slower than in many industrialized nations). Many of these mergers, as Public Citizen and Free Press have reported, have been allowed by regulators because of Comcast’s considerable political muscle. Comcast’s latest regulatory battle has been to oppose Net Neutrality — a rule allowing a free and open Internet — because the company would prefer to have customers pay for preferred online content.
Olbermann has been a strong voice in favor of a free and open Internet. Republicans, on the other hand, have supported the telecommunication industry’s push to radically change the Internet so corporate content producers have the upper hand over start-ups like blogs, independent media, small businesses, etc. As Reuters has reported, the incoming Republican Congress has signaled that it will vigorously side with companies like Comcast against an open Internet.
It is not clear why MSNBC has selectively suspended Olbermann indefinitely without pay — but the move showcases the limits of the corporate media. While modern technology has created a seeming multitude of entertainment and television choices, the reality of corporate media consolidation has resulted in fewer investigative news options and less voices in the media with a critical perspective on powerful business interests. Olbermann has stood out as a voice for working people in a media universe dominated by “reality television” and business lobbyists posing as political pundits. It is unfortunate that Comcast and MSNBC have chosen to suspend him. [Update: Comcast has no formal control over MSNBC yet, but will once the merger is complete in the coming months.]
Update Earlier this year, the New York Times reported that Comcast CEO Brian Roberts tacitly acknowledged that he would be open to interfering with the editorial content of MSNBC shows and with hosts like Keith Olbermann:
Comcast is in line to acquire control of NBC Universal, once regulators sign off on the $30 billion deal. Mr. Chernin asked Mr. Roberts how he planned to handle daily editorial control of such an immense news operation. “Are you saying that you’ll never interfere?” he asked. Mr. Roberts blanched slightly at the question, which included a hypothetical situation that had Keith Olbermann, an MSNBC host, attacking a couple of Republican congressmen just as the approvals were being finished. “Let’s have that conversation in six months or 12 months,” Mr. Roberts said.
Update Media Matter's Eric Hananoki notes that MSNBC host Joe Scarborough gave a local Alabama Republican candidate $5,000 as recently as last year, and CNBC host Larry Kudlow donated $1,000 to Republican Chris Shays in May of 2009. Indeed, Kudlow also serves on the Leadership Council to the Club for Growth, a group that has donated over $2 million to Republican candidates this year. Do NBC ethics rules apply to Scarborough, Pat Buchanan, Kudlow, or other conservatives working for the media company? As Greg Sargent reported, a close reading of the NBC ethics rules suggest that the political donation standards do not even apply to opinionated hosts like Olbermann.

It's really weird that MSNBC's ethics policy would consider donating your own funds to a politician a sackable offence, but apparently have no problem with Olbermann using his show to attack the opposition party and campaign for his preferred party.

As I understand his ratings have been pretty decent for a cable news channel that isn't FOX News. And while he may well be an intolerable ass,
I wonder if MSNBC has had second thoughts about trying to become the leftwing FOX... maybe discovering like Air America before them that left wing politics really don't work like right wing politics.
EDIT - Or possibly MSNBC's taking a completely new direction based on a change in corporate ownership.

UPDATED: We have been notified that Comcast has not yet officially taken over MSNBC/NBC Universal. Although Comcast has tentatively finalized a deal to purchase a majority stake in NBC, Comcast awaits final approval of the takeover from the Justice Department and from the Federal Communications Commission. A statement from Comcast reads: “The joint venture between Comcast and GE has not yet received regulatory approval. Comcast is not in any way involved with decisions made currently by NBC News.” However, once Comcast gains final approval from federal regulators to move forward, Comcast COO Steve Burke, a Bush fundraiser, will be placed at the helm of MSNBC and other NBC companies. Our original post inaccurately asserted that Comcast’s Burke was involved in the decision to fire Olbermann. We apologize for the error.

A liberal "newsman" that spouts a liberal agenda from his pulpit (news desk) is caught giving money to the liberal candidates that he was actually campaigning for on air. Something his company said was a no-no.
But he wasn't fired. Just sent home for a bit. He made out just fine then. Don't cry in your beer over him.

In all fairness a merger/purchase of this size and complexity isn't like buying a pack of gum. It takes congressional approval and up to several years of filings. The author believed that by now the purchase was completed. You are right that he should have made sure and he does look like an idiot for not double checking, as he should, but we are being dishonest as well by giving the impression that we are talking about a simple purchase as well.

Apparently he won't be fired and will be returning to his shortly.
Article
Keith Olbermann, host of MSNBC's 'Countdown' show, was suspended without pay 'indefinitely' last week for making political donations to several Democratic candidates, which was judged by NBC executives a violation of rules governing journalists' conduct. But after much outrage, commentary back and forth on the topic, online petitioning and expressions of support from colleagues, Olbermann's indefinite suspension turned out to be just a long weekend's break. On Sunday evening, it was announced he would be resuming his role Tuesday.
Much has been said already about whether the original suspension was justified, but what do you make of MSNBC's rapid reinstatement? Has MSNBC made the right call, reinforcing their ethical code by administering, in the end, a rap over the knuckles for Olbermann? Or was it an ill-judged move to begin with, now compounded by a hasty reversal of policy after the public outcry?
Seems like a lot of sound and fury after all.
