No...

This is Happy Saddam Hussein is Sentenced to Death Day.

Of course, I am sure the equally memorable Abraham Lincoln Fires George B. McClellan Day is just as equally celebrated.

guy fawkes was a real person in history. He conspired with a couple other people to blow up the british parliament under king james the first. He was guarding the barrels.

the graphic novel V was inspired (which the movie v for vendetta was based off) partially from this incident which occurred in 1605.

More V for Vendetta really. I doubt most people even know it was based on a work of Alan Moore (Most people don't even know Watchmen is based on the work of Alan Moore...)

I knew it was based on a graphic novel, but that's interesting - didn't know both it and Watchmen were by the same guy. Learn something new every day, I guess.

And yes, that is something that most Americans only know because of V for Vendetta. I for one had never heard of Guy Fawkes until I saw the movie.

Oh well.

Time to celebrate the 6th of November, wherein the Second Polish Republic is proclaimed back in 1918, which this time around it is with great certainty another republic would probably not need to be declared for at least another six months, nine at most.

First of all, is that some phonetic Kiwi mispelling?

Second, "no longer a British colony"! That sounds so hilarious.

You are aware the 5th of November is celebrated for the (Epic) failure of an attack on the government right?

I think that you guys might not celebrate guyfalcks because you have 4/7. If you did, then you would be letting of fire works twice a year and that is just inconcevable.

Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators were traitors and terrorists. The day is not to celebrate the fact that he attempted to destroy Parliament - he was attempting to install an absolute monarch on the throne, in the continental Catholic mold. He was anti democratic. I always find it a bit weird when Americans hold Fawkes up as a freedom fighter. Perhaps it's because it enforces your myths that Americans invented freedom? The whole 'struggle against tyranny' thing? It's worth remembering that England dealt with the idea of taxation without the consent of the people back in the 1300s at the latest.

No, the day is to celebrate the fact that he and his conspirators were caught, tortured for a few days, then drawn by the neck from a horse - they then had their genitals cut off, before being disemboweled (whilst alive) and finally decapitated. We build bonfires and throw effigies of Fawkes on them every year and light fireworks in celebration, and quite right too. If he had succeeded the concept of constitutional monarchy, upon which our freedom is based would probably never have come to pass. Without these ideas, there would be no America, for example. In fact, didn't one of the founding fathers say that they were fighting for the same rights 'as any free-born Englishman'? Fawkes and his fellow traitors would have happily trampled on those rights.

He was no freedom fighter.

You guys should have a similar thing for 9/11 - you could all get together and throw Osama on the fire, light fireworks, eat hotdogs...

Not the REAL one - an effigy! Though I would be in favour of offering bin Laden a similar fate to Guy Fawkes...

I actually knew about it from a British girl I dated a few years ago. I was talking to her and when I asked what she was doing she said getting ready to celebrate, I was unaware of any holiday on November 5th but then she told me all the history behind it.

No no.. it's classed as too cruel now, we have to give him a £16k a year in benefits and a council house in Kent if we catch him.

I hope the bastard gets away!

Well.. or the troops are smart enough to put a bullet in the fether, im happy to make him a martyr.

That's pretty awesome, if so.

Didn't think I would get his big of response of people giving me a lecture on who guy fawkes was. Anyways yes I know its about the failure of guy fawkes and his conspiriters. That is why I referenced that actual act not just the movie or the graphic novel.

Also no I dont celebrate guy fawkes day but since allot of dakkaites are in or from england I figured it would be a nice gesture. But it seems like since I'm american I shouldn't be wishing you all a happy killing a terrorist day.

Ill remember next time not to wish anyone a happy obscure holiday again. I really dont like people treating me like I'm ignorant because its not an american holiday.

*edit* the government line was just thrown out there for the fans of the movie or the graphic novel.

Can't you see how that would look like approval for the actions of Fawkes and co.? It didn't look like you knew what it was all about.

@Monster Rain - Yeah, many people do still burn effigies if they're having a bonfire. Obviously, not everyone has the space (or desire) to light a huge fire in their garden, so most people just set off fireworks. There's a weird tradition (which I've mainly seen up north) where kids make their effigy (known as a 'guy') and go door to door, sit on street corners asking 'penny for the guy'.

Not sure why they do it.

Bristol is a pain in arrse around Bonfire night, everytime you venture out to the shops you get accosted by groups of pikey rat children shouting "oi mister penny for the guy". Half the time it isn't even an effegy, just some illegitimate half brother who they are trying to get shot of before their benefits go down the pan.
