Been Around the Block

U.S.

Been around long enough to know the blah blah on personal choice, and "whatever you like," etc. I guess the gist of it is that I like the look and idea of the elves, but don't want to play the army that everyone is going with....I already play Blood Angels and have since 2nd ed. So, for Fantasy, I wanted to do something a little less popular. I've got a case full of 6th or older Empire stuff (some of the first plastic swordsmen, halberds) as well as a block of the old metal flagellants, but the empire just does not appeal to me at present ( am building an imperial guard army for 40k mostly in boxes still).

I guess the question is: Before I pull the trigger on High Elves, is everyone else gonna be playing them? There is little I dislike more than Marines v. Marines in 40k, So I just don't want to end up running into a ton of other elves players.

I thought about lizardmen and even picked up one of the Temple Guard champions to see if I liked painting the models, and I like it okay but it doesen't sing to me like Blood Angels. Also How are lizardmen in 8th? Ughh, I am rambling now and I appreciate your feedback, I guess I'm just trying to talk myself out of doing high elves.

If I had to pull the trigger right now I'd go high elves, maybe orks, (like the idea of orks).

Any thoughts or recommendations? Arguments against starting another High elves Army?

I believe high elves will come down in popularity over the next couple months. They are so popular only for the fact they are so cheap to start due to the island of blood. They have tons of weaknesses, and once the "band wagoners" find out they really aren't a very competitive army if you take away Teclis, they'll revert back to their former armies.

So if you want, go for High Elves. If you like elves in general, why not take a look at dark elves? They are extremely competitive, and at least in my area, there's not that many people who play them regularly (most people have them as a second or third option army).

LM are another good pick for this edition so far (barring army book creep). Slann are hands down the best casters (as they should be, since they pretty much taught it to every one else). Salamanders are great for dealing with large infantry blocks, and as usual their basic infantry pack a pretty good stat line (outside of WS and I).

I'd hold off on OnG at the moment, as they're slated for a new book in about 4 months.

I went through sort of the same thing with space wolves, I wanted to play them as they are basically the *only* imperial army whose fluff I enjoy reading, but since every other person plays them, I decided to get rid of em.

The difference here is, High elves just aren't top tier (unlike space wolves, who are arguably THE top). People looking for that cheap army will eventually let it go and play something else once they realize the army isn't just an auto win.

Skaven are nice, cheap with high numbers, add a screaming bell/plague furnace and no longer will the little ratties run away

I would also suggest skaven as an alternative. In practice, I end up seeing less skaven armies (despite the fact that they're also in the starter set) due to the need to paint so many models! And since they are in the set, you can get them rather affordably .

Not "everyone" is playing high elves, although it is a popular army atm. A good idea would be to pick up Island of Blood and see how they both feel! Then trade away the half that you don't end up needing.

As a new player to fantasy, I would avoid lizardmen. They are mostly static and not the most fun army to start as a beginner, imho.

If Elves realy appel to you then get them. i've been playing high elves for over 2 years now and have not one complaint except the fragile bodies(toughness and strength) but with there excilent magic and ranged skills by the time the enemy get to you with a bit of luck and no-how they'll be greatly reduced in number. however if you dont like this idea then i'd suggest wood elves

they have great melee units such as the treemen and there ranged skill is just as good.
