I don't plan on using Marbo, but it says his pistol is a Sniper as well as a pistol. Does this mean it counts as a Heavy weapon (as with normal snipers) or an assault 1 weapon, as with normal pistols?

Look at page 31 of the rulebook under the Sniper entry.
Where does it say anything about the Sniper characteristic making a weapon Heavy?

It's type Pistol and has the Sniper rule - that's not the same as being type Heavy. BRB pg 31, Sniper.

Sniper rifles are normally classed as Heavy 1 sniper ... only the heavy stops you moving and shooting ...
In effect his pistal always wounds on a 4+ and str3 vs vechicles, has rending. and gets one assault shot (as well as a close combat weapon) thanks to pistol

OK, thanks. Plus, while on the subject, is Marbo worth taking?

as with all other questions of that nature, the answer is; It depends.
It depends on the rest of the army he is with.
It depends on what you wish to get out of him.
It depends on which level you are playing the game.
Try him out.
Play some games.
Have fun.

He always kills something. Sometimes it's himself.

that pretty much sums it up. he's always killed his points value or more for me, including once when the demo charge deviated onto himself (hey, still *technically* killed his points value!). i basically use him as a wild card to keep my opponents guessing. with bs5 IIRC, his demo charge is relatively accurate too. against marines, i tend to throw him at a squad in the backfield that has a long reach like devastators. he throws his charge and kills a few and then the opponent has to determine whether or not they should fire that expensive unit at him and/or charge him instead of firing on more expensive and game changing squads (like those claiming/contesting objectives). since i tend to target backfield units, there's usually not anyone else to help the unit he attacks.

Id put marbo in any imperial guard army. he pays for himself and more, more often than not and he adds some real versatility when he comes in from reserves and pop on the board close to something thats causing you trouble (vehicle, terminators etc)

By all means try him . At 65 points he is a steal considering what he brings to the table. With his unerring surprise deployment you are guaranteed a chance to cripple something valuable.

I have to agree.
While he is pretty hit or miss, most times you will find that he earns more then his points back when used correctly and the dice don't screw you.

+1 on trying Ram... ekhm... Marbo. As far as I remember he'd always made his money back. Often twice his cost.

Yeah, like everyone else has already said, it's like asking if Missile launchers are worth taking. Maybe. Depends on if you're a squad of Long Fangs or a HWS. And even then it depends more on what else is in the army.
Give it a shot though. He's half a basilisk, and a force org slot that you won't miss.
