An absolute IG noob starting with new-old (very old, in fact) toys. Gentle guidance in the direction of playability is sought. The list is heavily influenced by what I have. I can of course, buy more. Truth be told, I never seem to stop buying more stuff anyway. Tallarn Desert Raiders: 1499 points Edited because I miscounted models. HQ: 110 points Company Command Squad: plasma pistol, 2 x grenade launcher, autocannon, Officer of the Fleet - 110 points Elites: 105 points Stormtroopers x 5: 2 x melta gun - 105 points Troops: 789 points Infantry Platoon (IP): 452 points Platoon Command Squad (PCS): boltgun, lascannon, 2 x grenade launcher - 62 points 3 x Infantry Squad (IS): lascannon, grenade launcher - 75 points each - 225 total Heavy Weapons Squad (HWS): 3 x missile launcher - 90 points HWS: 3 x autocannon - 75 points IP: 337 points PCS: boltgun, autocannon, 2 x grenade launcher - 52 points IS: melta gun, heavy bolter - 70 points IS: melta gun, Commissar - 95 points HWS: 3 x lascannon - 120 points Fast Attack: 235 points Hellhound 3 x Scout Sentinel - 105 points Heavy Support: 260 points Griffon Leman Russ Battle Tank: lascannon, heavy bolter sponsons - 185 points The Hellhound will go forth and try to fry something worthwhile before being destroyed. The Sentinels will get in the way with first turn, perhaps outflank without. The Griffon will set as far back as possible and do the only thing it can do. The LRBT will lumber around a bit and shoot. The third platoon will usually blob and go looking for trouble while everyone else tries to take something with them before they go. Edit: I've got another squad of Tallarn and a couple of special weapons blisters on the way. I've got other vehicle options, including three Chimeras and two Valkyries/Vendettas. A Manticore is under consideration. This list is probably absolute crap, but I need to get started and get some practice with the units and the orders, so I'm going to give it a whirl before the reinforcements arrive. Any advice on how to build a hybrid foot/mech list would be appreciated.

For what it's worth, I played this list today. The enemy was a mostly mechanized Guard army. We played Annihilation with Spearhead deployment. I got first turn and won solidly.
Some units disappointed, but that was expected. I want to try things a bit, even if they aren't popular.
The Griffon was the biggest disappointment, range is actually a factor in Spearhead. It survived, but accomplished little. It will probably not see more duty. I'm wondering if it's chassis can be used for something else.
The Russ didn't do much either, but it was pretty much bullet proof since no melta weapons ever got close.
The Sentinels destroyed one Hydra and could be viewed as partly successful, but I don't think they will be out again. Autocannon Sentinels might just about be worth playing, but I doubt one needs three.
The Stormtoopers immobilized another Hydra and destroyed a Sentinel as they ran away. These guys will need transport. An Astropath would have been helpful as well.
The heavy weapons teams were all destroyed, but they did some damage first. It's still doubtful whether they're worth their points.
The Infantry helped out, but I never fired a lasgun. The blob did some fighting and there was one model in addition to the Commissar left. This unit is clearly not well equipped. Frag grenades will probably never destroy a Sentinel. I'm thinking melta bombs for the Sergeants may be worth taking. Power weapons would help, obviously. I think a third squad would also be a good idea. GW is providing one as we speak.
I'm still not sure how much mech to mix in. I doubt I'll go the veteran route, as there is no good way I can see to put shotguns on Tallarn. I can see another squad of Stormtroopers and a pair of Vendettas. I'm thinking Chimeras for the PCS's and possibly the CCS; however, the CCS has useful orders so I'm not sure I want to use them in a suicide, melta role.
We usually play 1850, so I'll need to beef this thing up. I'm looking into adding a Manticore and possibly a pair of Medusae.
Advice is certainly appreciated.

Dont know enough about guard yet to comment much on your list, but it would be so good if they brought them out in plastic.

I've found the manticore to be a great choice. It has good range and can cause a lot of damage quickly. Beware keeping it in reserve however or you may be firing one or two missiles all game. The astropath is a nice addition but only if you plan on using reserves outflank a good amount. The autocannon upgrade to your sentinels is a good idea, the increased AP and S can really help (I can't kill things with multilasers so I may be biased here).

I like the Tallarn too. I've had some Cadian stuff for a while, but I can't get interested.
My Tallarn are mostly just spray painted some awful shade of brown. Maybe someday soon I'll paint one or two and post a photo. I've just obtained a Manticore, I must confess to being a bit miffed about the AP. Still, it's going to get a try - eventually.
Autocannon Sentinnels would be a step up.
