While I was flipping through the Imperial Guard Codex today, I felt compelled to build a list with Rough Riders in it. Now I have two questions about the unit and how it works. The unit may purchase two special weapons, and the sergeant can have a power sword. However, in the rules for 'Hunting Lances', it states that 'A unit armed with hunting lances counts as being armed with power weapons that strike at Strength and Initiative 5.' If a unit of five rough riders bought a power sword and two special weapons, would the whole unit count as having hunting lances for its first charge, or would only the two unaltered models in the unit count as having power weapons with the rest of the squad striking as per their profile?

The second question is that if Straken were within 12" of a charging (or if the unit has Mogul Kamir) rough rider squad, how does Furious Charge work with the Hunting Lances? Would they count as Strength 6 and Initiative 6, or stay at Strength and Initiative 5 as per the wargear rule?

Just wanted clarification before I do something stupid.

These are both straight out of the IG Codex, page 100:

1. The sergeant would still have a hunting lance because he trades off the laspistol for the power sword.

2. The two rough riders would lose their hunting lances, because they need to trade them for the special weapons.

This is my interpretation:

3. IMHO, It makes no sense to have a character that grants a furious charge that doesn't work with the unit's special assault weapon. I would say that they stack, purely on this basis.

There's just an acre of you fellas, isn't there?

I disagree on point three.

Furious Charge increases the models Strength Characteristic. Hunting Lances replace the models Strength Characteristic. As such, they do not stack.

There have debates on this previously with regard to relic blades.

If hunting lance replaces the model's strength characteristic than doesn't it become the characteristic. For what it's worth I feel they would receive it, just like I believe a relic blade would.

No, they do not receieve it.

You are striking at S5 I5 because of your weapon. The fact your profile now has you at S4 I4 is irrelevant, as it is your profile that is changed and not the special rules of the weapon.

So another question as the topic of rough riders apeard. Can you choose not to use hunting lances?

No, you have no choice but to use them - you are not given an option anywhere.

No. But why would you want to not use them?

WHen you've ended up charging a landraider?

Not many situations where it would be better to use S3...

The Rough Rider entry states that "Rough Riders use their hunting lances the first time they charge into close combat", I would have to say that if they charged a vehicle, they would use their hunting lances if it was their first charge. Any charge after that, use whatever weapons you have on the squad.

You can always choose to use grenades against a vehicle. No special weapon stating you have to use it changes this.
