Hi there,
Im kind of new to the warhammer 40k universe . I would like to know if I can take Empty Drop Pods? or do they have to be with a unit? I know they fall under the dedicated transport section would that mean they need to be attached to a unit.
Cheers

Generally, I think you need to buy them for a unit. However, that does not mean they need to have a unit in them when they drop. You are more than welcome to walk a unit of Tactical marines on from the board edge, while dropping the pod you bought for them completely empty.
The drawback, of course, is that you cannot now buy a rhino for that tac squad, since they already bought a drop pod.

You must buy them as an upgrade for a specific unit, and the unit you buy them for is the only unit that can start the game within that transport.
However it seems you can drop them empty.

As the others stated.
1. You must buy them for a unit.
2. Even though you buy them for a unit, you are able to deploy or reserve the squad seperatly, and drop the DP empty.

If you get into the realm of Imperial Armor (forgeworld models and rules) they have a drop pod that is basically just a drop turret, I think they have assault cannon drop pods and whirlwind launcher drop pods.
Look for a "Deathstorm drop pod" in Imperial Armor Book 2, page 153.
