I've seen the guys from the Beasts of War videos say (perhaps erroneously) that a rhino loaded with a squad was "holding" a point instead of just "contesting"... is that possible?

The squad inside the rhino can hold a point, but not the rhino itself. At the end of the day, it's just semantics though if you have a rhino with a troops choice in it, it's holding the point.

The unit (presumably Troops choice) *inside* the rhino is what is claiming the objective, not the actual vehicle.
The reason it is used is that it is convenient shorthand instead of saying "the unit inside can be measured to by measuring to the hull of the vehicle they are embarked on, as per page 66 (possibly...) of the rulebook"

Actually, the rule to invoke is the one on page 90 of the BRB. Last sentence on the page under 'SCORING UNITS'; "Unit of Troops embarked in a transport can control objectives (measure the distance to their vehicle's hull)."

I have found again and again that in encounter actions, the day goes to the side that is the first to plaster its opponent with fire. The man who lies low and awaits developments usually comes off second best. - Erwin Rommel

Whcih is a redundant rule as the rule for measuring to embarked units *already* allows embarked units to control an objective.

Okay. I've just never seen anyone do it in my small group. Last time a checked a guy dismounted his termies from the land raider to hold a point but he probably didn't know he could do that.

Relic of 4th edition, where being embarked in a vehicle removed you from interactions with the game board. They worked out this sucked....

Termies are elite choices. They can't hold objectives.
.....unless they were shifted to troop choices by logan or the DA character of course.

Ah, semantics kicking my butt again. I meant contest. But I haven't played against SM since... the middle of Summer, I think. So it's been a while.
