I see tons of OOP models while trolling Ebay for ork stuff (decent bit of SM, too; not sure about IG). There are definitely models out there for sale, the main issue is finding one that hasn't been irreparably soaked in glue and paint, yet somehow lost half of its parts. Lots of items are barely recognizable for what they were and hardly worth a discount price considering the restoration work they'll need - except that " OOP VINTAGE RARE!!!1!1!" in the title means that sellers will frequently jack up the price.
Good thing I think all the 2nd ed. crap looks like... well, crap. Can also check trading sites (or Dakka's very own swap shop).

You can get decent prices on eBay, and better prices at the odd flea market. I've gotten Dreadnoughts from 1988 for as little as $8 at fleas.

Yep. Start with the trading area here, and the one on warseer as well. You also might try putting an ad on the bulletin board at your FLGS.
My older brother used to collect Marx playsets. He had phenominal sucess by leaving ads at pizza places. The ads were simple photocopied sheets with some small pictures of what he wanted, with the word WANTED in big letters across the top.

Mk 1 stuff, in particular land raiders seem to have been always tough to find...even 8 years ago when I wanted one....and if I did fiind one they were like 80-100$. I think ebay is a good start point, you just have to comb the 40k items weekly, see if one crops up!

Depends on what you want. The Mk1 Land Raider is pretty hard to come by, and thus usually expensive. I don't recall seeing many old Ork Battlewagons on eBay...they come up occasionally I assume. But to get one in good condition, could cost a bit.

Even the old rhinos (and rhino hulled vehicles) have started to creep up in price.
In general, anything old and plastic is going to be rare. Anything metal (or resin) and in demand will eventually be duped. How many ebay auctions have you seen for 10 oop models, all in the same pose?

As others have said, Sunday markets and shops which specialise in re-selling junk is an ideal place to start.
Ebay is full of the "rare" pieces of crap, with the extortionate price tag added on. Scary how much people don't learn. An item does not sell so they relist it week after week with a £1 discount each time.

Another thing to keep in mind is the relative of popularity of miniatures, and the market penetration of GW in the US at the time, which combine to mean that there are very few older miniatures of any sort for sale in the US.
Going to a Salvation Army type store and finding a box of miniatures is not very likely. Which does not mean that I do not keep my eyes open of course.

Ebay my friend...no point in shopping elsewhere these days.
As someone who has a few old 2nd edition models from my teenage years I will tell you that the old casting is drastically inferior to modern technology. As a result the details aren't nearly as defined, and thusly the models don't take paint quite as well. This holds less true for old pewter, and more true for old plastic.
Modern injection molded plastic and resin kits are the way to go IMO. Get a tub of greenstuff and some pictures....build something that looks like what you want.

You can also get lucky and run across random folks that are selling duped GW models. They shut em down pretty quick, but its a good way to pick up 10 thunderwolf mounts for 10 bucks if you find the right seller.

You know relisting it the first some number of times is free, 2-5 depending on your seller status. Some of those people actively hunt down the old minis to sell them and they price them to not just recoup their cost but to have made the effort worthwhile. Just because a guy has to make $X to make it worthwhile doesn't mean you fault him for setting it as the minimum. You wouldn't take someone seriously if they came upto you in a store and ask to buy something off of you, which you just bought, offering you less. Even with recasters you can make an arguement about exorbitant prices too, ethical issues aside, the same basic arguement that whatever effort they put in deserves appropriate compensation. With the ethics set aside, that if it costs them $X to get and cast it, compensation according to those efforts are appropriate. This exactly why there are reserves.
Just because its ebay doesn't mean it should be cheap.

There are people who've scratch built replicas of the Mk1 Land Raider... as a model its so relatively simple... there are templates floating in the ether of the internet. There is also a guy on ebay who sells modern versions of the tracks for use with the modern Land Rader kit and for use with the Baneblade... so there are alternative if you're willing to put forth the effort and not the money.
