Subject: Rulebook necessary?

Hi, I'm a new player who's been playing 40K for awhile but some friends convinced me to try out warmachine, so I picked up a Khador battlegroup and a unit of widowmakers off ebay to get me up to 15pts.
The only problem is I looked at the quick start rules and it doesn't seem to explain what to do with infantry models.
Am I missing something or will the units have enough rules for me to figure out how to use them on their stat card? or do I have to buy a rulebook?
Sorry if it's a dumb question but I've only actually seen this game played once. Thanks!

You need a rulebook in general, but yeah there isn't anywhere near enough on a card to tell you how to play infantry units.

Thanks, haha they tricked me into starting it up by saying it was cheap because you didn't even need the rulebook, just the stat cards were enough.

You'll need the MK II rule book eventually. You can, however, skip on the faction book if you have the cards. I would grab a copy of the cheat sheets for now as at 15 points you have a 'caster, two 'jacks, and some infantry. The quickstart pamphlet that came with your box and the cheetsheets should be enough until you're ready to move up to bigger games.

You don't, actually. Barring infantry, you can get all the rules free online. Mind you, infantry are a rather large part of the game, so when you feel like graduating from Mangled Metal picking up Prime is rather helpful.

The softcover rulebook is full color and costs $30. It's a bargain.

And if you buy one of the new plastic kits, (i'm fairly certain) they come with the quick start rules, so you can get playing with those models right away.
And honestly, who doesn't buy a rulebook for a game? If I'm interested in a game (Like I was with Malifaux), I buy the rule book and read it. Then i think about buying models.

I don't always buy books for games. Unless I find myself playing the game a Lot.
I know there are many people reading this, who have a storage area full of Game Books and miniatures not used. I have been Giving away books and armies becaues they are not being played anymore.
If I played the game a few times. IF: a local group or a gamestore is hosting games, I will buy the book.
I am also going from 40K to play warmachine.
Currently I am reading the PP website and Dakka to find out what army to buy.

When picking an army consider two things:
1. Which army's typical behavior matches your playstyle.
2. Which army you think looks most baller.
In general:
Cygnar - Combined arms. Good mix of ranged and melee options but you pay for it point wise. The shoot lightning and act like a modern military force that has giant steam powered robots and magic instead of tanks and planes and crap.
Menoth - Individual units tend to be a bit weak, but synergize well with each other. Scary well. They set everything on fire and have access to cheap units that become scary when buffed. Fluff wise they're about as understanding as the Catholic Inquisition and as cuddly as Al-Queda.
Khador - About as subtle and graceful as a wrecking ball. Units are somewhat self-suficent, and can stroll through a hail of gun fire to hack into you with their giant commie axes. They freeze stuff and act like steam punk soviets.
Cryx - Undead pirates. If you let a 12 year old come up with an army concept it would be these guys. About as sturdy as your mom's china (not that china, you know the good china you aren't allowed to touch). They move fast, melt stuff with acid, bring their dead back to unlife, and can send magic flying all over the damn map. Also, full balls out evil.
Retribution - Not quite a full force yet. Seems like you can pick between out shooting the other guy or out brawling him. But not both, they don't seem like a combined arms approach works very well for them. No real elemental affinity with them as far as I can remember, but they hate magic and can do bad things to enemy warcasters. Fluff wise they're North Korea run by Tolkien elves.

If someone is kind enough to locate the pdf for you or teach you how to play you dont need one, when me and my friends start a table top game we usealy get a copy of the main rule book and it is circulated between us, eases the pain of playing with dolls all-day a little, not very much tho.

The prerelease WM Mk 2 rulebook can still be downloaded from PP's site.
