Dark angels or standard space marines, they don't strike me as having alot of close combat.

Use the regular Space Marine codex and bring a Reclusiarch with a bodyguard along with a 2nd Librarian.
Are you going to paint them up in the pre-heresy red color?

Use the normal Spess Mahrens codex as it has a different and larger range of psyhic powers and is newer than . Thats strange though, as I came up with that idea a while ago and was thinking about it earlier. Do you want to work together on it?

I would use the standard SM codex. As mentioned above, more Psychic Powers and it's newer than the DA codex. The fact that you're doing a Pre-Heresy army also makes me lean towards the SM codex.

Ironically, I'd have to say Space Wolves. As much as I dislike this aspect of them, they are capable of fielding up to four, very powerful psykers who can bring some similarly powerful psychic powers to the field.
Grey Hunters seem to operate in a fairly similar fashion to Thousand Sons and there are plenty of pre-heresy options. Just be sure to stick to the theme and I can't imagine anyone would complain.
Just don't use Lone Wolves, Blood/Sky/Swift Claws, Thunderwolf Cavalry, Fenrisian Wolves and the normal post-heresy stuff and it's ironically a pretty damn good fit.
Finally, Njal could represent Ahriman pretty damn well IMHO.
I'd recommend either this of as Nurglitch suggested, CSM.

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

Ironic that thousand sons worst enemy has the best codex for them.

The irony is delicious and the SW codex is the best for now. When the Grey Knights are updated though, maybe use them. They are the Imperium's current all-psyker chapter.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
