Upon reading the errata/faq from GW, it says that when gun drones disembark from a vehicle(like a devilfish) they are not placed 2 inches away from their mounting or access ports, but instead 2 inches from anywhere on the vehicle. To me this implies that they disembark as though it were open topped, but I also can see it as just simplifying the disembark so that the 2 drones on opposite sides of the vehicle have more room to move(keeping out of the way of other potential disembarkers.
This is probably completely obvious but, can gun drones assault after disembarking? Can they fire after disembarking from a vehicle that moved too fast for passengers to shoot from?
Thanks in advance.
Edit: one more question! Since they function as a Gun drone squadron after disembarking, can they make the jet pack extra assault move after disembarking? Depending on the open topped-ness of their disembarking, I can see them being unable to assault, but would that also stop them from hopping around?

Hello Guardsmen, look at your Leman, now back to mine, now back to your Leman, now back to mine. Sadly, your Leman isn't mine, but if they stopped using standard engines and switched to Lucifer Pattern, they could move like they're mine. Look down, back up. Where are you? Your in a battlefield with the Rhino your Leman could move like. Whats in your hand, back at me, I have it, it's the fire control for the Twin-linked Assault Cannons aimed at you. Look again, it's a Deep-Striked Land-Raider. Anything is possible when your Tanks move like Blood Angels, and not like Guardsmen. I'm on a Baneblade. |

Why would you want to assault w/ gun drones in the first place?
More on the topic, I don't believe the rules actually make the vehicle count as open topped so I would believe you are not allowed to assault.

Well the issue came up in a Tau vs Tau game I had. His kroot outflanked and tarpitted my Broadsides, after all the shooting on the kroot after my broadsides fell, there were still some kroot left. We ended up saying the drones could assault for this game, if only because I was going to lose anyway(I had lost most of my important units), so I assaulted his remaining kroot with my drones so that they wouldn't get the charge on me. My drones ended up getting a sweeping advance too XD. It seems pretty obvious to me after the fact, I guess I just wanted to hear someone else say it.

They can fire, no matter what the vehicle did. Embarked units are restricted in their firing, but if they step outside, they can fire all they want (I know, it doesn't make sense, but that's the rule).
I don't know the exact wording on the gun drones. If it does say that they disembark, they would not be allowed to assault. If it just says to place them on the table, then I'd say they can.

Drones are treated as passengers, and would disembark normally except for that special permission - otherwise they would be forced out the back, which would look very odd.
If they disembark they can fire, however count as having moved (not an issue for them) and if they disembark BEFORE the vehicle moves they can then assault as well as firing.
