Hello,

Not sure if this is the right section...but I was wondering if anyone knew any good modern war games at 28mm scale or so. Something like the war in Iraq, or some make believe situations? I cant seem to find a good one over the google.

Also, whats a good place to buy some models for it? Just like Modern day ARMY models or their equivalent.

Thanks!

Ambush alley is a great game for modern era
(That's what its designed for!)

for models I recommend the assault group
(never used them but their models look awesome)

Ambush Alley (as mentioned) is good for counter insurgency stuff, the same company makes a game called Force On Force which covers more conventional stuff as well as te insurgent stuff. A new version of force on Force is coming (published by Osprey) next year, but the current version is great. http://www.ambushalleygames.com/ By the way, these guys have some good scenario packs and expansions as well. (Disclosure: I am on their playtest team and have some rule writing credit with them too.)

Also check out Two Hour Wargames. They have a free set of rules called Chain Reaction 3.0 which covers current day type actions. It allows things like gangs against cops, regulars against insurgents, and uses some pretty cool mechanisms, but is a LOT different from most games. Their Yahoo Forum is fantastic and any question you have will be answered by the author quickly. http://www.angelfire.com/az3/twohourwargames/free.htm Try these. They are good.

Another game I have but have not yet played is Flying Lead by Ganesha Games. http://www.ganeshagames.net/modern/ They look pretty cool, and they have an Afgahnistan expansiion.

Another game I have played and is pretty neat is We Can Be Heros II http://www.tfpgames.com/ It, like Chain Reaction covers more than just moderns but works well for moderns.

As for minis, there are plenty out there in 15, 20, and 28mm. I use 15mm for modern soldier/insurgent battles but 28mm for SWAT/Cops against bad guys. Ask this question on The Miniatures Page http://theminiaturespage.com/ for a slew of answers. Some nice ones I have or have seen are Eureka Miniatures: http://eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=87_150 http://eurekamin.com.au/index.php?cPath=591_592_593 Empress miniatures (these are FANTASTIC): http://www.empressminiatures.com/page8.htm but there are plenty of others.

Enjoy, there is a LOT out there!

Theres Battlefield Evolution Modern Combat. Interesting game. Its more symmetrical than your average modern day game. Can get a little broken though with the likes of Russian Armored Rape Train or Middle East Biker Spam. Not only that but they seem to love USA (they get both Army and Marine lists and have the most choices, not to mention the A10)

Ambush Alley - Its was designed for Iraq. But I would say that...

Only choice to be honest. As for minis, try the Likes of Empress, Mongrol, The Assault Group for 28mm.

Remember you can try before you buy: http://www.ambushalleygames.com/quickstart.html

That is a link to the Ambush Alley quick start rules/scenario which allows you a look at how everything works.

What size would you suggest?

Probably smaller than 28mm. Thats all I know though since its hard to find 28mm modern stuff (with my limited knowledge anyways)

I have a lot invested in 15mm terrain and vehicles as well as infantry for both moderns and Sci Fi. As I mentioned, I do also have 28mm. I think if I was starting over I would consider 20mm for the ranges of infantry and vehicles available for moderns. Having said that, 15s realy are best for me (play area and storage space, ease of painting...)

My zombies, SWAT, cops, gangs/survivors are all 28mm though.

Really you just need to look at what is out there, maybe ask on the Ambush Alley or Two Hour Wargames forums/Yahoo groups or TMP to get an idea. Then decide what periods/armies/nations interest you most and see what ranges will work for you.

By the way, I have a LOT of Rebel 15mm stuff and really like it. Mike at Rebel is a good guy to work with.

Thank you for your answers, I will look more into 20mm, I was thinking of either German KSK, or ARMY Rangers. As far as I've seen there are pretty good 28mm and 15mm German KSK figures.

Well for Army Rangers go for the Elhiem Figures, easily the best 20mm Modern US forces on the market, blows all other out of the water, and I own every different type!

As for KSK... Not much in 20mm. Currently no-one does a figure with a G36 in 20mm.

I would also recommend my own forum - www.guildwargamers.com

We are a primarily 20mm WW2 and Moderns forum, and have 'Living' catalogues of many figure companies, not too mention huge galleries of work and a membership that comprises both manufacturers (Elhiem for example is one of the Mods and S&S Models run their builds on the forum) to veterans and all are gamers with a massive knowledge of what is available. If you want something in 20mm, ask there and they will point you in the direction. Or in the case of Elhiem, he may very well make it for you...
