G'day gentlemen (and women).
A friend of mine is interested in starting a game - 40k or fantasy, I don't know yet; does anyone know of the best way to introduce them to the hobby?
Thanks in advance.
-edit for spelling.

If you walk into your local store the staff will give your friend an intro game even some of the better independent stores will do it too just so you can get a feel for things that might be a good place to start.

Thatks, but there isn't a GW very close to us. Any other suggestions?

Well i think the best and cheapest way if you don't have a FLGS. Then split on a AoBR (Assault on Black Reach) box. It's a good starter set and it got both a minirule book of all the WH40K rules and a scenario for the units to play on. It's a simple and easy way to get started
I did that and i never regrettet it!

Hope they realise what they're getting themselves into. Painting, cost, time lol. Its a big step but hopefully one they enjoy.
As said above, try and get them a demo game. Even if its just you showing them a mock battle on your kitchen table.

We have a game club close enough, and several people who would be interested in seeing them join. The contraversial part is that they (there are two of them, sorry for not mentioning that) are girls. Is there anything different I should do?

Or you could go for something different say the Mantic Kings of War? Less rules and if he/she likes it then they can use those models with warhammer fantasy.

I'd find out if they like the hobby part/game part first. After that, try to play a few small games, even if its your army vs your army. Give them some old models to paint up. Try to help them as much as you can, especially in the starting phases.

If you can try to make sure they play there game on good terrain with painted minis. I remember walking past a GW store when I was 11 and the seeing all these cool model battlefields with painted guys on them got me hooked =) Prober;y would not have happened if my first encounter with the game was a bunch of "greys" on a book hill fighting over a shoebox. hmm, how about start by taking them to a GW store. Those employees are so excited and enthusiastic about the game....its like they grind games workshop models into a fine powder and do a few lines of it before they start their shift! I love their personalities though. Plus he will be ensconsed in everything GW at the store and give him an idea of what direction to go!
