Hate to post this in 2 places but here is my post from the Tactic thread with an added jumping of list

So I am just starting to get back into Warhammer Fantasy after a bit of a hiatus for various reasons and I notice there is a new edition. I've read over the various changes and will pick up the rule book shortly but here's my quesiton.....

Are the days of me summoning an Undead horde and winning through attrition gone?

I understand the change to power dice. 2d6 blah blah this makes my old tactic much more....unreliable. Is it worth still trying to build toward it?

My old list was, roughly off the top of my head
Manfred
vampire with Lord of the Dead
vampire with Summon Ghouls
Vampire with Creatures of the Night
3 Smallish units of Skeletons(11 models or so)
3 units of Dire Wolves(5)
2 Corpse Carts
Some Grave Guard
This was 2k
The list revolved around me using powerstones and tossing out 1 dice at a time to bump up my starting units quickly to ludacris size. I used attrition to win and had very little "super killy" things in my army. I enjoyed the way it played and had units where I needed them never fully being destroyed unless I wanted them to die.

Is this at all still viable?

Looking to build something like this again and starting out at 1k points this is what I came up with
Vampire - Dark Acolyte, Summon Ghouls 145pts
Necromancer - Sceptre de Noirot 80pts
11 Crypt Ghouls - 88pts
11 Crypt Ghouls - 88pts
11 Crypt Ghouls - 88pts
5 Dire Wolves - 40pts
5 Dire Wolves - 40pts
Corpse Cart 75pts
20 Grave Guard - Full Command + Banner of Borrows 315pts

Still have 41pts to play with and not sure where to go with the points. The basic idea was Necromancer attempts Raise dead at least twice a magic a phase, or as needed, with Sceptre to block charges and/or be annoying
Vampire looks to bump up the Ghouls as much as possible
Dire Wolves for flanks(maybe bump this unit up?)
Corpse Cart is for the ASF
and Grave Guard so I have some sort of "killy" unit at this lvl.

Thoughts or ideas/any input is much appreciated

You may get 1 or 2 magic phases at best if your lucky. With the increase in charge distances and large infantry blocks you will be in a bad position if you can't summon (if you fail a roll you can't cast any more).

Most VC players in my area use skeletons now instead of ghouls because they can parry. You also would really benifit from a BSB in the army.

Really? I think if you're not worried about banners for blood and glory, ghouls in horde are much better than skeletons. The parry is okay, but fistfuls of poisoned attacks are pretty great too.

Maybe for bunker type units, a skeleton block with parry and a musician to swift reform for extra mobility.

Yup, each VC army at my store has 2 Skeletons units, and then 1 or 2 Ghoul units.

What's the general consesus on Black Knights? I use to be a big fan of a 5 to 6 man unit shooting for the flanks with the direwolves

As for the 1 or 2 stopping my magic phase I'm not too worried about it. I have "devil" dice lol. Would it be better for me to change out the necro for a 2nd vampire as I expand my list?

Also....can someone explain how parry works? I still don't have the new rules and I might try and swing a skelly unit in for the vampire instead of the ghouls.
Thanks again

One of the guys I play runs a Wight King with 5+ KB, in a unit of Black Knights, works wonders for him.

Parry is simply a 6+ ward save if you have HW/Shield (note, Spears/Shield does not give parry because you must use the spears in this edition). If you are flanked/rear charged you cannot parry.

Splendid. Thank you for the explanation on parry. But that seems like a poor reason to run skellies with shield over spears if I can try for asf via corpse carts. Interesting, I'll need to try both out. I'll hammer out a list and, hopefully, get some games in this week
Post my thoughts and any tweeks for more feedback

As a vc player I can say that the ghouls are amazing for poisoned attacks however with no armor save a 11 block even at that lvl will have a hard time getting to where it needs to go against anything that can shoot (even skinks with javalins).

Hello,
I run a similar list, and my suggestions are:
1. The magic phase has changed, you should read up on the new format, especially 'broken concentration' as it could seriously hinder your magic plans.. So basically, if you fail concentration with the vamp early, your entire phase will be raising 10ish strong zombies everywhere... Which is feeding 50 Points to any unit that can kill 5 zombies in combat (which is almost all of them: looking at you skinks/slaves). The bound spell mechanic has also changed, and now counts as a spell that requires dice from the pool.
2. Helm of command
3. You could lose a rank from the grave guard, that would be my first suggestion if you need to free up some points.
