I was thinking about adding cloaks to my Space Marine Scouts. Would this be good, or should I attempt something else?

Suggestions?

I hear that cloth is really hard to do. Maybe start out making some 'nid conversions?

I would start a little smaller, like purity seals or something of that size. Green stuffing cloaks and capes takes a lot of practice, start small, go big later. Or use a test model(s) and see if you like the results. Hope I helped.

no, no. Dont' start with free-standing cloth. That is way beyond a beginner level.

Start with something that's small, and that's non-structural. For example, facial hair, regular hair, little tiny applique detail. That kind of thing.

Clip the a pony tail off one model, and use a teeny ball to join it against a bald head. Then take a needle or scalpel (keeping it wet) and poke at it very carefully until it resembles a little bit of hair. I'm just a beginner myself, but the devil seems to be in the details. Start out extending an existing depression or recess as opposed to trying to sculpt it freehand.

WIP, but hopefully you get the idea.

Small conversions that are easy to do and gives you a basic knowledge of sculpting would be starting with hair/fur and basic plate armor (think Musketeer-style smoothed armor). As a first time project, Plague Marines might be the best. You can use the hair method to help sculpt flesh distilling out of the body and start to practice sculpting pus and boils (which is very similar to that of hair. There was an Old GW Article on both subjects). Plague Marines are good because you cant really mess them up, any sort of mistake you can simply chalk it up to rusting armor. You can also practice Chainmail, which looks just as good as cloth, but somewhat simplier to sculpt (Poke the surface with two types of fine needles and then make the links by jabbing it with a hobby knife so they look lined up).

Adding spikes and horns to regular SM to turn them into CSM is both easy and rewarding, and cost effective. Havocs are overpriced models, but devastators are not as bad. The metal Havoc weapons look more detailed by far, but you can corrupt the devastator weapons yourself. They may not look as sharp as the GW metal guns on the first try, but it's a lot of fun. Also, gluing heavy metal parts to plastic torsos is NOT fun.

My general opinion is do whatever it is needs to be done at the current time, as that's how you develop the skills and get better. It's not going to be easy, and your first stuff might not look superb, but everyone has to start somewhere.

I think using GS joins to make heads is great practice personally. Plus its nice to be able to bang out one off heads.

Well guys, don't forget I play vanilla Space Marines, so suggestions along that would be good.

I saw a quick and easy tutorial on make cloaks/caps so that is why that came to mind, as well as I would like to add the camo cloaks to my metal scouts.

Try sculpting something small first, like a Chapter Icon on your Tactica's shoulderpads, the geometric Squad markings (Devastator Squad symbol, Tactical Squad, etc...) etc. Tabbards are rather easy, but Cloaks are not. Cloaks will generally be defined by whatever the wind is doing, so you'll need a good idea of that before tackling it. You'll also have to basically sculpt an armature for the cloak. Tabbards generally will be affected by the groin area of the marine more than the wind and you dont really need a base for them since they rest between the marine's legs.

As my first real project, I did some robes for a primaris psyker. You might be able to do something similar for scouts instead of camo cloaks.

A few purity seals are good for your first day, since they're nice and easy and will give you a chance to feel the consistency of the stuff and just what amount of water you need to stop it sticking to your tools yet not flooding it and stopping it sticking to your model. Small aquilas on backpacks are fairly straightforward too unless you go overboard and think you need to sculpt every feather. (Don't.)

When you go to nice cloth, try a few tabards before cloaks as suggested above would be a good idea. The flowing fabric bit is the same with a smaller area and better idea of where it works. Maybe try a DA style robe afterwards since it's quite similar to how one does a cloak but you don't need the armature because it's following the lines of the model.

Incidentally, if you intend to use a lot of green stuff, you can get it far cheaper than at most model/miniature shop.

Okay, I just got done painting my first model in 9 years- an all metal dreadnought. Time to add some decorations. I have seen some "Quick and Easy" tutoprial on the purity seals but can't find it. Anyone got links?

Thanks.
Ted
