I made about 8 Necron Destroyers from low grade Gundam models I got for free. I am wondering if they are ok to use. I have had a hard time finding the dimensions of a Necron Destroyer, so I do not know the length and width of one. I am sure that mine are just a bit too big, But I think I could break out a rotary carver and shape the radius if needed. Here are some pictures to give you an Idea of what I am working with. The Destroyers without Gauss Blasters will get a real one once I order it, but the other four will use the Gundam weapons I have attached. I appologize in advance for the terrible image quality, for the pictures were taken with a camera phone.

Any insight?

Can you put them next to a 40k model for scale?

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

There are 2 Necron Warriors ridding on the back of one Destroyer in another picture, but here is a side-by-side I took a while back.

agreed, too many pics, not enough justification for this thread... and how much do/did these things cost? would it not have been cheaper just to but the real models?

Solo, I do not see what you are agreeing to, but I did mention that these were free. Other than the small amount of glue and spray paint I have used. I am saving alot of money doing this.

Yeah, they're huge by comparison...

I've got a destroyer off it's stand and next to a marine and they're about the same height. It's about the same length as a marine bike.

Otherwise, I think they look awesome, very original!

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

He got them for free, so it would be hard to beat the price.

Thank you Gavin,

I am not too worried about the height, but more so the radius for battle. But as far as my original concern, are these okay to use in a typical match?

Kilkrazy,

I am wanting to know if these are ok to use for a match at something like a GW store. Can you help me out with some information?

Ok, well thanks anyway Dakka I will have to find out elsewhere if it is okay to use these in battle. Thanks for trying.

No, I'd seriously doubt they would let you use them.

Perhaps not at a GW store because I highly doubt I'll ever play a match there, but maybe a mini war-gaming store? If you believe not, please give some reasons why.

So it's a straight up no from most mini-war gaming stores supporting 40k matches or you just do not know? I guess that sort of makes sense, in a way that no one would play a Magic of the Gathering match against someone who printed cards onto a a cardboard box... But then again, those are people that just seem to be a bit obsessed with the brand and not the strategy and customization.

I don't see a particular reason why not to allow the use of the Gundams, however each independent store owner operates his own policy.

Some people might only want you to use GW models. You will have to ask at the shop.

The main concerns people have with unofficial models are:

1. Are they easily recogniseable as what they represent? Yours are.

2. Are they "modelled for advantage" in some way, such as being smaller so they can find cover easily. Yours are fine in this respect, as far as I can tell without putting them next to a GW Destroyer.

Informative, thank you very much.

They are certainly bigger than GW's destroyer models, and could be abused as screens for other minis.

But they look cool.

As ever it comes down to asking your regular opponents/casual opponents/game store/GW/Tourney Organiser.

there are no hard and fast rules but be prepared if you are not allowed to use them.

Just from the photos I'm saying that they are a tad too big. If it's a friendly game and people understand what they are you could probably get away with it.

Could look up if what super heavy options Necrons have for apocalypse games and model them after that if all else fails, or if you can create the fluff for it use them as monolith's maybe?

When you say "screens" do you mean like (line of sight)?

The problems with those being so bloody huge is actually ALOT. Even if you kept them 2 inches apart from one another, your opponent would never score more then 1 hit with a blast template. You can use them to screen MUCH larger units because they cover alot of real estate on the board. You would really need to have your opponents permission to use those, and I think Id say no for once. They are just too big for what your using them for.

For the sake of being sure, could you take a picture of one of your necrons infront of one of those gundams?

On top of the issues presented earlier, you also get the fact that those things will always be in LOS even if behind a building. I run a defiler heavily modded into a dread and he towers over buildings. But in your case the "benefits" outweigh the "bad".

How bout run them as Tomb Spyders, they are MCs and with the model being that size it may work.

Would definately need permission .. but you're going into sensitive territory here. I recall a post from a while back where a guy rocked up to a gaming store with printed cardboard cut-outs of Tyranid minis (taken from GW site) and wondered why people refused to play him.

Where I in your shoes ... I'd shelf the Gundams and try to find something which resembles the GW models more closely.

I like your idea and 'flavour' of your models though.

Rock on

I wouldn't try taking them to a tournament, but for friendly games I say go for it.

Yeah, he even showed photos. They were, as described above, printouts of nids off the GW website in little stands. He was shocked that no-one would roll dice with him. It was pretty funny .. wish I could find it. I don't even know what forums it was from.

Am trying to learn a second language and vocabulary and grammar refuses to stick in my brain .. yet pointless crud like this guy's post seems fresh as a photograph.

They're great for friendly games in a buddy's garage, but I would advise against trying to use them at FLGSs, even non-gw ones. Perthaps especially non-gw ones.

Partly it's about recognizability on the table, WYSIWYG is there to cut down on confusion so you can focus on whats going on with the game, and stand-ins and wacky conversions may look cool, but it's also a disservice to your opponent if he has to worry about what represents what instead of how to play against it.

More importantly for a game store, tables aren't free. Most shops have high overhead for rent and utilities, and in a normal retail store that space would be used to carry even more product. The reason game stores have tables instead of more product is to get people in, get them playing, and build up a playerbase becuase people that regularly play also tend to regularly buy stuff. It's bad enough to regularly play at a store and not buy your models from there (ebay sales are still a big problem for shops), but there's little an owner can do to prove you didn't buy it at his shop, and with official models they can't really disallow it, even if they wanted to. But gundam models very VERY obviously weren't bought there, and these kinds of stand-ins are usually pretty obviously more about saving money than looking cool. Using those kind of stand-ins regularly at a shop that costs quite a bit to keep going on a monthly basis is a real slap in the face to the owner. Support your local game store or don't play there. Otherwise, you're just being a jerk (even if unintentionally)

I actually think the guy with the printout tyranids would be more welcome, long as he's just trying to see if he like an army enough to purchase it and not trying to use it permanently. A gaming buddy at my old store did just that with an IG army, and I've used graph paper for warhammer fantasy to try new units out. But again, if you're gonna use it regularly, support the shop.

So.... they don't look anything like necrons, and they aren't anywhere near the correct size, and they don't have the correct weapons.

They are fine proxies, in the same way that a soda can or a GI-joe is a fine proxy. I would not plan on taking these to serious games.

I'd let you play them with me, but then I'm a softie when it comes to things that might alter the rules.

I'd prefer they be on flying stands though.

I'd also be much happier with you playing them as some kind of home-brewed MC Destroyers than as regular destroyers.

And I'm not a big follower of tournaments, but from what I've heard don't even bother bringing them.

I appreciate all the answers, despite how old the thread is. I've decided to turn the models into statues for a playing field. I will paint them too look ancient and inactive, as if part of some ruins. Maybe add some flock and land to add the aged look.
