Hi i recently posted asking whether or not the dwarf battalion would be a good place to start my army. The vast majority of posters seemed to think that it was so i went out and bought one today yey! Well the thing is this is my first fantasy army and as such i am totally at a loss as to what to built from the boxset:
do i take quarellers or thunderers ?
do i use some of the warriors as long beards ?
How should i equip my warriors hand weapons and shields or GWs ?
do i built a cannon or an organ gun ?

I am an absolute noob when it comes to fantasy, but my army is going to be smallish basically the battalion and hero. I do however realise the unit choices may change depending on the opponents army, my friends who i play use lizardmen, DE, WOC, Skaven and DOC.

I would really appreiciate it if anyone could offer advice as to what to built and/or any basic tactics Help a beardling out!

I woul make the warriors with great weapons as they go last against most and ive found that hand weapon and shield is pretty bad with normal dwarf warriors as there only strength 3.I would make 1 unit longbeards they are a must have as there strength 4 i usually use them with shields as an anvil.

Thunderers/quarrellers are both very good so you cant go wrong with what you make. Thunderers are more points and get +1 to hit but only have range 24 while your quarrellers are cheap and will not have to move to get in range of pesky longbows.

Cannons/organ guns again are the best artilley in my opinion make either i would say organ gun to start as its versatile and hits hard whilst the cannon is generally used for dragons/warmachines so you will need to make 1 of each eventually.

I've continued to have success with shield warriors, but suspect that, generally speaking, great weapons are a better default. I don't use any core shooters, but if I had to pick, would probably go with crossbows for the extra range and cheaper sticker price.

And I'll second Benny's artillery advice. If pushed, I'd say go with a cannon first, since it will be able to down monsters that you simply don't want to otherwise fight.

Welcome to the Dawi!

Thanks for the responses at the moment i m thinking longbeards with hand weapons and shields then warriors with GWs i ve managed to make my cannon/organ gun interchangable however i m still stuck on the ranged units i m leaning towards the thunderes however i m still unsure :(

What little play I have had leads me to like thunderers. The +1 to hit negates the long range minus so easier to hot at the full 24 inches of their range.

The upside of Quarrellers now IMHO though is the great weapons, I've had a bit of success with a big unit with command and GWs.

Shoot, shoot then chop em up when they get ya in combat.

After a little more looking at stuff I can imagine a few times where the extra point spent to make them scouts with great weapons can make them ok as well

I like a hoard of 50 longbeard rangers with great weapons and throwing axes. Very few enemies can stand up to that.
