Hey guys, I want to model an open-topped chimera... Which means some plasticard work.
How can I model rivets on the plasticard hull to make it look homogenous with the rest of the model?
Thanks.

What I use is plastic rod which I cut with a hobby knife. There is a tool that leaves even dents but it takes some pratice in its use

Poke around on there. That guy actually orders the rivets in bulk from some company and I know the link is on there somewhere.

Hole punches. You can get them in some REALLY small sizes that are perfect for rivets. I used about 500 or so on a scratch built battle wagon I made, and they are a perfect size. You can get the whole punch for around $10, and really any plastic works, yard sale signs, empty bottles, whatever.

Where do you get small sized ones? ( and what size do you use? )

The work of 3 seconds with a new invention called google.
Although anything punched by a 1/16 would be too large for use on a marine sized model. Probably perfect for vehicles and walkers.

I've used a proper miniature rivet puncher before. It is incredibly easy to use.

Yup Google sure is handy! You can find nice cards and stuff on it. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2158/2275943479_a025b88a4b_z.jpg

Come now, that undue hostility is a tad pointless, no?
OT: Thanks for the suggestions, does anyone know the diameter of rivets on IG vehicles? Automatically Appended Next Post: http://www.patsicrafts.co.uk/ourshop/prod_354766-Single-hole-punch-116quot.html
That would do the job, right? 1/16"

I thought everyone was just being massively clever??
So I take it there is no golden brand of hole punches or sets of hole punches?

What can I say, snarky comments about 'that new invention called google' when I was asking for first hand opinions from 28mm modellers on this forum as opposed to oh, say, a train modeller, tend to seem rather impolite and patronizing to me. You're right though, why would I find a sarcastic comment that basically amounts to him saying 'DUUUUUUUHHHHHHH!' as rude? Crazy me.
Now, back to the rivets. Hole punches would seem the best way to go to me personally, but since no one can commit to sizes specific to 40k infantry vs vehicles, I may snag a sheet of Archer Surface Details: Assorted rivets in the meantime. It's not like I need an unlimited supply, although it would be nice to have the capability of reliabaly producing my own for less than 80 bucks of tools.

I use a leather punch, you can pick them up from any haberdashery store (sewing shop). The smallest setting is ok for ork vechicles but to big for anything imperial and rhino sized imo (would work for a titan though).
Personal I want something a little better so I can do smaller rivets and because it jams quite a lot and I have to poke a cocktail stick in it to free all the rivets.
Still it's an easy to find bit of hardware in most towns so it might be worth giving it a go,

What we need is some kind of reference of 'this is an X-mm or x/16th rivet on a marine. This is an X-mm on a Land Raider, on a Battlewagon' etc etc.
There are plenty of tools to make rivets out of, hole punches, punch dies, cutting styrene rods, pva drip method etc. But knowing what size tool will give the results you want is a diff story.

THe problem is that on current GW production Ork vehicle models that the rivits are all different and imperial vehciles the rivits are so small. I will post the size and number of plasticard rod that I use when I get home but for imperial vehicles but it is super small. What I normally do on imperial vehicles is just shave off the current rivits and replace them with my own in order to keep the look the same. The only time I mix rivits is on Looted Vehicles or if there is large armor plates being added to a vehicle.

Thanks pip, that's the kind of reference we would need. In fact, I think it would be worth making a '28mm rivet scale reference' article about it once some good info is gathered by gentlemen such as yourself.

Ok here is the different size plasticard rods that I use for rivits:
Evergreen Scale Models StripStyrene
Item No 221
Size 3/64" or 1.2mm
I use it for Ork Rivets
Item No 219
Size .025" or 0.64mm
I use these for IG and some SM rivets. Great for rivets on small ork armor plates and glyphs.
Item No 219
Size .020" or 0.50mm
These are for replacement of some of the fine rivets that I accidently shave off.
Any smaller is for some parts and models that are special.

No problem. Cutting rivets by hand might now sound like fun and it will drive one nuts sometimes but when it is done well those rivets make a mini look great. So worth the time.

Done the cutting thing, def not looking to repeat lol! But now I have reference to order either hole punches or resin rivets of the appropriate size!
The ones I cut are always ever so slightly off angle, drives me nuts.
