Hey, new to 40k here, so sorry if my question is silly.

I am going to use a SM Commander/Captain for my first HQ, but I bought the plastic sprue set.. not the metal one in term armor. The plastic sprue comes with term shoulders, and I have a pair of term legs sitting around. The only thing I'm missing is a torso. Would using a regular SM torso be alright if I wanted him to be in 'terminator armor', or do I have that torso as well?

you'd be more likely to get people to agree to it if you base him correctly (on a 40mm base and not the 25mm one the commander in power armor comes with); i'd be fine with it if you did. also, i'd throw a normal shoulder pad behind his head to simulate the cowling that terminators have but power armor marines don't to make it less obvious of a conversion.

Don't use a regular captain/chapter master. A Terminator captain is one of the worst HQ choices in the codex. Make him a counts as special character in power armor (Vulkan, Shrike, Pedro) or a power armor 100pt Librarian.

If you want a Terminator captain, get Lysander. He is a beast!!!!

Not sure which parts you're looking at, but the plastic Captain kit doesn't come with any Terminator parts.

Simply for the sake of the model fitting together and not looking a bit rubbish, you would be better off just picking up a Terminator. The power armour torso doesn't fit together with the Terminator legs. If you do somehow manage to make them go together, the combination of Terminator legs and power armour top half is going to make him look like he's wearing clown pants rather than Terminator armour.

Thanks for the replies folks; I'll just keep him as is then. But I have a question:

Why is he one of the worst? I know he loses the Sweeping Advance. Would just a plain Captain with some good wargear be better in that case, if I don't want to use a special character?
And why a 100pt Librarian specifically?

Also, I bought a Space Marine Commander set, and there are totally shoulder in there that look like terminator shoulders! Unless other shoulders can have the cross and skull emblem...

The skull and cross pad represents Terminator Honours (meaning the marine has trained in the use of Terminator Armour)... it's a power armour pad, though. Terminator armour pads are larger, have a trapezoidal sticky-outie bit on the bottom, and lack the rim around the edge.

If your getting a captain put him on a bike. Sorry but I almost collected white scars and their were a lot of bikes in it.

these are better questions answered in the Tactics section(I don't know if the search function is working correctly again, but you could try that or make a new post).

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

The Captain on foot, although not bad alone, is generally regarded as one of the worst HQ choices to take. The reason is because he adds nothing to the army, and his combat prowess does not justify his points. For example, taking a captain on a bike lets you take bikes as troops, making an all-bike army. Most Strengths of the SM HQs is that it improves your list as a whole.

The librarian for example, has one of the most competitive powers around (Null zone). Cast it, and all enemy units within 2 feet have to reroll invul saves. This lets your entire army shoot at invul save enemys and kill them effectivly. The Codex also has a slew of special characters (Vulkan, Pedro, ect) that you could build with the commander box and use as a counts-as. These guys have great army-wide bonuses.
