I only know what I have read in the codex and on the forums about Tau, I have no actual experience playing Tau, but I'm trying to build a list:

Here is what I have built and why:

HQ:

Commander Shas'o - Missile Pod, Plasma Rifle, Multi-Tracker, Drone Controller and, 2 Shield Drones 147pts

Troops:

Fire Warriors - x6 60pts

Fire Warriors - x6 60pts

Elites:

Crisis Suits - Missile Pod, Plasma Rifle, Multi-Tracker x3 186pts

Crisis Suits - Missile Pod, Plasma Rifle, Multi-Tracker x3 186pts

Crisis Suits - Missile Pod, Plasma Rifle, Multi-Tracker x3 186pts

Heavy:

Hammerhead - Railgun, Smart Missile System, Targeting Array, Disruption Pod 175pts

Total:

1000pts

I was told that Troop choices are basically a weak point in the army and not to put too much in the way of points into this section

Crisis Suits are bread and butter so I put 3 squads with Missile Pods, Plasma Rifles and, Multi-Trackers all Units geared the same

I did the same for the Commander and added Shield Drones for added survivability for him and the unit he is attached to

And of course a Hammerhead

Please let me know what you think, what you would do different and why. Any and all advice is welcome!

I don't play Tau myself, but a few friends do. Don't go too low on troops or your going to auto-lose most objective games. Also, those troops need transports.

I run Libby w/Avenger and sternguard in a drop pod. Full fire warrior squads in heavy cover, just melt before this. With a transport, I could only kill it and a few. Also, don't give the fire warriors carbines. Stick with range and rapid fire. Much better weapons.

Otherwise your list looks pretty good to me.

Speed freaks 4000 points
Drop Marines 5000+ points Black Templars 1500+ (+1000 WIP)
Word Bearers 1000 points Fleshtearers 3000+ points
Catachan 2000 +(+500 WIP)
Dark Eldar 1500+(+1000 WIP)
High Elves 3000 points Vampire Counts 2000 points

Sound advice.

And, Sir Blayse, you're right here. A reasonable list, although, RustyNails, I'd drop two suits and beef up the FW units.

Without transports and minimum sized, put them in Reserve, so they stay off the table annd will last. With a Devilfish, though, they'll do better. At 1k, it's pretty good.

In addition to the above advice, I would drop the O to an El, HW the Multi-Tracker, and give him Targeting Array. It gives you the same BS and frees up 15 pts. I would use those spare points to put some upgrades on the devilfish suggested, primarily a Disruption Pod. I would even kit it out entirely as a warfish (SMS, TA, MT) if you can find the points, but if you drop a squad of crisis suits, that still gives you 2 Devilfish with Disruption Pods, and maybe a few more FWs, which is acceptable.

You could also give Bonding Knives to your Crisis teams with the extra points you have.

I'm relatively new to the game and I started on Tau (what a choice that was, hahaha). I have a pretty decent 1250 list I could send you if you're interested. Best of luck!
