I found a bit of a contridiction in the codex and the FAQ concerning the Veil Of Darkness. The codex says any unit within 6" of the VoD can port with the Lord but the FAQ implies that the Lord has to have joined the unit after the Deep Strike...so my question is can I have the Lord stay IC and port it with lets say a unit of Wraiths? This way I plan to keep the Lord relatively safe from CC while allowing the wraiths to constantly charge into assault

Regardless of whether or not they were joined before they teleported, the Lord and the unit are placed together when they Deep Strike (that's specified in the Veil rules entry).
Since that happens in the movement phase, and you can't move any further after Deep Striking, even without the FAQ stating that he joins the unit upon teleporting, at the end of that movement phase he would be considered joined anyway since he is within 2" of the unit.
So no, there is no way to teleport a unit and not be joined to it immediately afterwards.

As Insaniak said.
The rules in 5th ed force you to join a unit to an IC if, at the end of movement, they are in coherency. This has to happen as you cannot move after deepstriking - you can run, but this is in the shooting phase.
The FAQ is meant more at 4th ed where you didnt HAVE to declare an IC joined, even if it were in BtB with a member of a unit. It means there is a downside to the teleport....

But having a Lord on his own is generally not a good idea, as a savvy player will take him out quickly, nullifying any resurrection orb you may have

In 4th ed you could not target an IC unless it was the closest unit. So a lord could happily sit in the middle of a bunch of units and not get shot (except with blast...)

Ahhh, did not know that. That wouldn't have been so bad.

Hence 5th ed being "true" LOS - you had stupid "cant see more than 6" into, or at all through, woods" and "you cant shoot ICs unless theyre right next to you" rues in 4th that took a TrueLOS base and then removed most "true" elements from it.
SO glad that edition is gone!
