I'm sure I can't be the first person to think of this. but I'm throwing it out for comment.
In order to add an element of surprise and drama to my Wednesday night 40K game, space marines vs. orks game, I came up with a little infiltration mechanic.
Whoever deploys first may choose to have infiltrators deploy concealed inside a piece of terrain such as a forest, building or ruin. The opponet will leave the room while the player will hide a token underneath the terrain piece represent his infiltrators. If the opponent has infiltrators the the first player will leave the room and the second player will do the same. This of course will require the presence of a neutral third party to ensure neither party cheats, if no suitable third party is reached then players may take vows upon the emperor.
If the second player choose a piece of cover that already contains concealed infiltrators the first player will be alerted and his unit will engage the the caught infiltrators in hand to hand. Immediately before combat begins deployment will continue as usual. On the first players assault phase the combat will play out as usual.
If a concealed unit is not discovered during deployment then it remains concealed until an enemy either attempts to enter the terrain or such time that the unit leaves terrain or fires weapons.
A unit entering a piece of terrain with concealed infiltrators will immediately be charged in hand to hand combat and have their initiative lowered to one.
I'm considering throwing in an overwatch mechanic, or also making the first shots from the cocealed unit count as pinning weather its a pinning weapon or not.
We play small skirmish type battles with around 800 points, thought this may spice up the game a bit. Going to try it out tonight.

I like it. I love warhammer but have always wished it would somehow involve a stronger stealth element.

There are a few units that do this type of thing.
It's much easier if you just write things down on a scrap of paper.

As a raven guard lover, I love stealth. It's a good idea!

I really like this idea, it's a lot like Flames of War infiltration, only in Flames of War you get a gigantic realistic table to hide your light tanks or infantry in.
I could totally imagine the enemy moving into a trap, your devastators appearing, and popping all his transports and tanks.

this technique could be QUITE useful for kroot....hhmmmm....I'll see if my friends might be interested.....I've honestly thought of something similar, but I couldn't get my brain to work out the specifics....
(and I seriously like this. this one little thing could change the way a battle gets played)

I am NOT a crook. I have never stolen a thing in my life. BUT I have borrowed things with no intent whatsoever on returning them.... |

Yeah players could just name or number each piece of terrain that it is possible to hide in and write down which one they intend to use. Or maybe draw a simple map of the terrain and X which one.
Didn't get to play last night, buddy couldn't make it. Might get to test it out next week.

Have you read Stargrunt II's infiltration/stealth mechanic? It's been a while since I've played, but for every infiltrating unit, you placed three markers (in terrain, of course) representing likely areas where those units could be. Once the enemy got within spotting range, they could determine if there was indeed a unit there, or you could spring the trap early by making a Leadership test (used for all SG2 mechanics) to 'assign' the unit to a specific marker. I found it a very cool way to play stealth/sniper units.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell
