Turn around slowly...

Since my local store is looking to start a warmachine tournament setting, i looked at all the armies and decided that I liked the look of the Khador army. The only dilema i have encountered is what to buy. Since the holidays are right around the corner, PP has released the Khador army bundle (convieniently the cheapest one too!!!). Should i buy this set, which includes:

-Khador battlegroup (new plastic box set)
-Khador heavy warjack kit (Decimator build)
-Winter Guard Rifle Corps full unit (1 unit box)
-Winter Guard full unit (1 unit box & 2 blisters)
-Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich
-Khador token set
-WARMACHINE template set
-4 Privateer Press 6-sided dice
-Privateer Press tape measure key chain
https://store.privateerpress.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=9669

Or, could you guys give me some suggestions on what to buy in order to begin playing?
All help is appreciated!!!

Some backwater sump

That's a decent start. Unless there's some discount involved, you might want to hold off on getting the regular Winterguard guys. PP is releasing new Trenchers and rumors abound about new Winterguard models.

Just what I heard, is all.

Much like the GW Battalion boxes, the package deal is nice to start with and you save some money, but there are some stinkers in there that you probably won't field all that often.

If you're just looking to learn the game it's a fine deal, giving you a powerful caster to start with, a good spread of warjacks, units, and a solo to get a handle on the different types of units and how they interact and move around the battlefield.

From a competitive point of view however, and if you're interested in Sorscha, in particular, very little of that bundle will hit the field with her very often. Sorscha likes to blow opposing warcasters and warlocks up with long-range guns after she freezes them, so you'll be looking at things like the mortar, Behemoth, widowmakers, widowmaker marksmen, Destoyers, etc., not inlcuding mercenary support like Reinholdt (a near auto-include for Sorscha for reload), Kell, and either of the Eirysses. A unit of MoW Shocktroopers is nice as well, to provide a defensive line for Sorscha before she goes for the big turn.

well, if i wasnt going to get that, what would be the best way to make a 15 point army (is that the normal point total for tournaments?).
I would like to know if a warjack heavy force is viable, and what units and Warcaster should i use to supplement that kind of army.

Thanks for the help so far!

EDIT: i actually think im gonna use a list from the PP forums. It is a unit of widowmakers and the battlegroup. What is your opinion on this starter list?

The normal tournament totals are 35 and 50 points, some side tournaments are also played at 15 points but it is a special case. The classic starter army of battle box and widowmakers is ok way to learn the game. You have there all of the pieces that you need to learn the game and all of the pieces are also valid for future armies.

After those purchases, where would be the next place to go in order to go to 35 points? Also, are there any warcasters for Khador that are better strategically, or is Sorcha just fine. I heard about manowars to protect Sorcha from an above post.

You guyys have been a great help and i appreciate all the help

I *like* the Winterguard and Kovnik Jozef. If you decide to get this, be sure to get the Unit
Attachment for the Winterguard. If not, then I'd consider Mortars, Beast-09, Widowmakers,
a War Dog and a Manhunter. However, I'm not quite sure on what kind of line unit you want
with regular sorscha.

If you're going to go with Winterguard heavy, either Sorcha, epic Irusk, or Strakhov would all work well as far as additional casters. I think epic Vlad could work well but I'm not as familiar with him and WG.

As far as expanding out, Doom Reavers and Iron Fang Pikes with the unit attachment won't steer you wrong with about any warcaster. If you really like epic Irusk, I would seriously consider the Behemoth to go with him.

The special boxed sets really don't offer much, if any, savings over ordering the items from most online stores, so in general it'd be better to put something together and order online that way you get a better selection.

The Khador starer set is pretty solid as Sorscha and both jacks are quality and can find a slot in a lot of lists. If you are going to run Sorscha, she wants Beast 09 (although most other casters want him as well, so he's never a bad choice). Winterguard are solid with either Sorscha. If you do the full death star i.e. Full Winterguard Infantry + Unit Attachment and Kovnik Joe, with basic Sorscha, they can use Bob and Weave in conjunction with her spell that gives them concealment to give them high DEF vs. ranged attacks while Joe gives them Tough and Fearless. With Epic Sorscha she gives them Iron Flesh and gets their DEF up even higher and she also gives them Combined Arms (trust me, its a great ability). And under either Sorscha's feat with Kovnik Joe's speeches they become suprisingly good, all for pretty light points (The unit, the UA and Joe combined are only 10). There are more than few Khador Casters that regularly take the winterguard death star, and very few that can't add anything meaningful to it. Also there's the War Dog, he costs a point and does amazing things. Every Khador caster wants a dog and there's no better way in the game to spend a point. Those are the biggest "can't lose" things for a Khador list that players tend to use and abuse.

Khador has a lot of good troop choices, that fill different roles. I'm currently enjoying my Doomreavers, due to their speed, weapon master, immunity to spells and magic weapons. They're the perfect Anti-Cryx unit really.

Winterguard are a solid option, especially once you putting in the support options (the UA combined with Josef is rough. All those boosted spray templates).

Kayazy assassins are strong too, especially with a caster who has Iron Flesh. Throw in the UA, and you get some rediculous DEF in melee. Add a caster who has a damage boost, and they can backline charge and kill a lot of casters.

The Men-O-War are solid, but i'm hoping that they're coming out with a 3 unit box choice in plastics before i buy them.

And I agree about the Wardog. No other 1pt will piss your opponent off than the dog. Countercharge, return (which works on any charge), tough and Guard Dog are all great rolled together. My dog has gotten a surprising number of kills in (and has even received Hate Tokens from eButcher...that was an angry pooch).

A good use for the wardog is to put it into position to countercharge an approaching arc node and not return, so now it's engaged and spells can't get to your caster.

Indeed about the dog. I use a Reaper pug mini as the wardog when I play Butcher. He's brought down an ironclad before. He almost bagged an alliegant last night trying to hit my mechanics, but my dice the past couple games have been lacking. I am about to have a summary execution in the back yard but that's a different story.

To be honest, about the only thing I'd flat stay away from in the Khador army are the woodsmen. They just don't seem like they work that well with anyone. Personally, I don't run winterguard because I don't like how that list plays, not for any reason aside from that. I also don't do many MoW anymore outside the Drakhun mainly because they have a hard time keeping up with an advance.

I was playing against Retribution, and my opponent popped Kalyssa's feat, making her army stealthed and unchargable. eButcher was 10" away from her mage hunters, but unable to reach them. My Wardog activated, ran inbetween the mage hunters, and was then charged by Butcher, for being a traitor to the Motherland. He then proceeded to kill 8 mage hunters, a light jack, and generate hate tokens. The dog failed his tough check sadly.

With a 14" run, that pooch can REALLY get around the board.

^I like that.

In a tourney I was at, the dog kept on dodging the Butchers' attacks and managed to kill more than the Butcher in one round.......I KNOW>>>dice fail there.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

From my experience in purchasing models for this game. Check ebay every day. I cant tell you how much money you can save by purchasing models from people who are trying to get rid of them. I picked up Karchev+Behemoth combo for 40$, each of those models cost over 40$ retail...EACH.

Now that I think of it, I own very few models that I actually picked up new. I think I purchased, strakhov, sorscha, kell bailoch...and thats about it.

If you play with friends mostly, then there is no reason to need to purchase the models immediately, just keep checking ebay for deals and you will eventually get everything you need and more, for alot less than you would have normally spent.

I never planned to buy direct, so ebay seemed to be the way to go. At the store i play at, I have plenty of store credit from the 40k tournaments i win, so i may put that towards some warmachine stuff. But anyway, I will probably buy the Battlegroup to start and add on as I go.
Should buy a Khador 2010 Deck as well or are there other essentials that are needed?

The 2010 decks are really just updated cards for MKII, nothing more. You shouldn't need them. If you're just looking for model stats to decide what to get, the faction book has more in it up to and including theme lists (they're hit or miss, but interesting nonetheless).
