So i had my first match up. And i hate to say this It left a bad taste in my mouth. I lost 1-2 in a best of three match up against a black templar player. I know the following i shouldn't be taking a big deal but it sorta irked me. We played on a regular hardwood table. I'm not a golden demon winner or anything. But i take my time painting. And it just doesn't add to the feel that i enjoy in mini gaming. I like seeing a board that looks like a battlefield and seeing my army men fight and die on it. When i got to the shop they where just finishing up a game between two speesh marines army's. They did not use a single piece of terrain. I got two ruins pieces and we placed them. They ended up going on the corners of the map. And also a hill which was put on the side and the table was left empty in the middle. >.> . there was no point in getting terrain really. So we both place our army's and start playing. Now this is one thing that really made me raise an eyebrow. My opposer had a large bag of dice next to him. a clear plastic ziploc bag. But for the entire match He only used 1 die. And I'm not even exaggerating this number but he rolled at LEAST 60% 6's . It was kind of frustrating when almost every roll was a 6. I didn't want to accuse him of cheating and be that guy. I'm new to the whole shop in general. So after i won the first match. He seemed to get upset and changed his list. I'm always kind of weary when people make lists in there head. Because he just started getting figures out of his case and putting some back in. In the next two matches i could not even remove a single model every save was made. It could just be insane luck so whatever. Oh yeah one last thing. So we needed to look up a rule. when he was looking at his rulebook and I at mine i noticed that he was using the Battle for Maccrage book. So we where using two different books. I don't know if there is that big of a difference in them or not. I think i might just drop out of the league and go play war machine at my friends house.. he got that huge table GW sells and set it up in his game room. - Rant over.
Edit- Sorry I remembered 2 things. So when we were starting our third match. I wanted to try something new and snake around hill. After we deployed the dude picked up the hill and moved it to a different part of the board. >.> and said it wasn't really part of the map. Also i looked up the Black Templars and there where a couple of things that i noticed. One is that he was telling me The Emperors Champion had a T 5 , so he wouldn't die to the Plasma gun insta kill. Also that that model had a 4up invul save. But the book says it's only in CC that he has that save. Also he was useing 2 Missie Launchers in his squads and i believe he can only take 1. So.. Rant really over now

Here they found real war, but they were not ready for it. They were used to easy victories. This deprived them of flexibility on the one hand, of tenacity on the other. For them, war was merely maneuvers. They have neither cavalry nor skiers, their tanks cannot pass over the snow.- General Zhukov |

Sounds like it's not so much an issue with the game as the locale and player. Give it a few more goes, preferably somewhere where they actually use terrain. On average, terrain should take up about 25% of the table.
And that guy sounded like a complete cheater. Only using one die that rolls a 6 60% of the time and never touching the other dice? Makin an army list in his head? Yeah, stay away from him.
Battle for Macragge isn't 5th ed, either, btw.

Sorry to hear that. Several things were clearly wrong here - no terrain, the table should have at least 25% of its surface covered with terrain. Preferably some of it completely blocking line of sight past it.
It also sounds like he was using a loaded dice. So you played against a cheater, which is never a nice experience. Another sign of him cheating is moving terrain after you started, which is just fething miserable.
Don't give up! The majority of people who play this game are friendly people who love taking new players through their first games in a fun way. It's sad you had this experience to start the hobby with, but it does unfortunately happen.
Did you play these games in a GW store? You could have told the staff, and they probably would have kicked his ass out. If you didn't - do that. Go into a store, ask the staff if they or anyone else in there wants to do some introductory games. That's what the stores are there for.

@Loki
I played it a LGS. I have played at a GW before and loved it besides getting asked to buy everything the shop has, haha. The LGS just started carrying GW stuff again. The staff that works there doesn't know how to play mini games. They are CCG / board game players. From what i understand it's one of the owners who is a Warhammer player and he is really into it. From taking with the guy i was playing casually he seemed like a regular there. He said he runs a RP campaign in shop on weekends. Maybe i just need to find a new store that is more focused on Mini war gaming.

If that guy is a regular, who runs a campaign, that's not a place I'd want to play at. Find a better LGS, or a GW store.

What a traumatizing experience! Next time, bring your own block of dice, that way you can share with your opponent...obviously the probability of rolling 6's like a god will change if he has a handful of dice like a normal player (seriously, who the hell rolls one die at a time?)! Next, if it bothered you to play on a surface eerily similar to your grandmothers coffee table (not trying to offend you), then I would recommend building and bringing your own terrain. Not only will you get the look and feel of the game you want, im sure ANY opponent would appreciate seeing some well constructed terrain to navigate around. I think that is a crucial part of the game and can change the entire dynamics of the game. You do those two things, your attitude about your experience will change for the better!
