Game 2 – Space Wolves
Mission: Lost Artifact
Primary: Objective Markers – Controlling the artifact is worth 20 points, Contesting is worth 10 points, if the artifact is not found the player that searched it the most gets 10 points, it no player searches it the both get 0 points. To find the artifact each player deploys one objective at the start of the game and
DS’s one on their first turn from the center of the table. Any unit can search an objective by rolling a
d6, on a 6+ the artifact is found and all other objectives are removed. Each successive turn spent searching adds 1 to the roll to search the objective.
Secondary: Kill Points – Score more Kill Points than your opponent (15/7/0)
Tertiary: Capture Terrain – Control more terrain than your opponent (10/5/0)
Tactical Bonuses:
+1 If you win the primary objective and it was one of your opponents

I am squared off against a space wolf player at table 30 or so, this is not too bad given I scored a measly 7 in the first round and there are still 40 or so people below me. This table has a ton of difficult/dangerous terrain and resembles a Necron Tomb world. My opponent wins the option to go first and deploys his Rhinos partially obscured with his
TWC and Lord in the center. The speeders are partially in terrain. The biggest obstacle this game is the large terrain feature in the middle. We decide the central feature is impassible, and the area around it is difficult.
My opponent also places his objective halfway up the board, which I like because I plan to search the heck out of mine on turn 1. I weight my forces heavily to the left flank, I want to smash open those Rhinos and then take out the
TWC with and a Canoness assault. In combat my power weapons and 3++ save with my Celestians retinue should let me tarpit them for a while and possibly killthem off.
Turn 1
My opponent deep strikes his objective and it scatters straight towards his board edge 11”. We then hear the clarification that vehicles can search objectives so he moves his speeders up next to it and promptly rolls a 6! I silently curse, I really thought the 5 or 6 units I planned to have search the one by me would force him to come to me but it looks like I must be aggressive now. Since he now has the objective, my opponent castles his Rhinos around it. His
TWC mill around a bit and get into cover. His shooting is ineffective with Living Lightning failing to hurt my transport.
Only one thing to do at this point and that is move up. I go to move the Rhino on my right board edge and promptly immobilize it in the adjacent terrain! The rest of the army goes full speed ahead and pop smoke on the front tanks with the Meltas squads trailing behind. One Rhino moves for a flanking motion and I take some shots at the Land Speeders and Rhinos with Exorcists. I manage to stun one speeder and weapon destroy a heavy bolter while the right hand side rolls a single missile and misses. Drat. I fail to repair my rhinos (I fail to repair it all game) double drat.
Turn 2
He shuffles around his speeders to get closer to the left hand Exorcist but shooting is ineffective. I am not sure why, but he disembarks three of his squads on the backside of his Rhino wall with the other squad hanging out nearby. His Meltas/Plasmas fail to hurt my Rhinos through smoke although he does manage to stun one with living lightning on the right.
I move forward with everything, lining up some nice Immolator shots. I also disembark assuming I will be able to break open the leftmost Rhino and eat the squad but for insurance I drop both Meltas out nearby as well. My first priority is to break open the last Rhino, and I succeed with a pair of Melta shots. The squad hops out, but fail their pinning. I fire a pair of Immolators at them as well as Divine Guidance Flamer/Brazier/Heavy Flamer shots and reduce them to a single model which fails its morale and runs.
The Celestians break open the other Rhino with an explosion that hurts no one and one Exorcist puts some wounds on the
TWC while the other shoots the Land Speeders again to no avail. In assault my Jump Pack Canoness is feeling pretty boss and goes Invulnerable, charging the entire pack of Blood Claws (I needed to hold them up for at least one turn). She manages to win combat but they make their leadership and we are stuck in. I nervously eye the
TWC nearby, but I am luckily surrounded by Blood Claws.
Turn 3
The Speeders move up and miss with their MultiMelta shot (They probably would have fired the Assault Cannon). The
TWC are eying my disembarked
SoB and move that way, although they do so at a glacial pace they still pull off the assault and wipe the squad. Living Lightning manages to stun my melta Rhino again and my opponent moves up with one of his to create a road block of sorts. The Canoness and squad stay engaged with the Blood Claws and I take a few more down, but he makes morale again.
The Exorcist continues to shoot and scoot and my priority now are the
TWC. I throw two more wounds on them to take one down and then throw another pair of wounds with the other Exorcist. My
SoB squad on the right moves up, and unloads to throw some more
DG fire into the Grey Hunter squad. They manage to take out most of them, but they make their leadership and that squad is going to be assaulted next turn. I reposition my Meltas to take some more pot shots at the
TWC. I also disembark and start running my other squad up to get to the objective although they won’t make it there by Turn 5. I reduce them by another wolf with the Meltas and feel confident in the assault. The Celestian and Canoness go Invulnerable and I charge one model into them while the rest go into the Blood Claws to free my jump pack Canoness. I lose 4 Celestians in the process, but horribly mangle most of the rest of the Blood Claws with Eviserator attacks. Everyone makes leadership and my plan to break the
TWC by forcing a failed Morale fails. In spite of it all, it is pretty awesome to hit with a Canoness on 3’s.
Turn 4
The speeders finally manage to penetrate my Exorcist, but only immobilize it, which is the best possible result. The Rune Priest squad fires into the
SoB, but fails to kill enough for me to make them reliably invulnerable and take the charge. I lose 5 or 6
SoB, but they stick around thanks to the book of stubborn. The other Grey Hunter squad repositions itself by the objective but line up a bit too neatly in a row…
In assault I finish off the rest of the Blood Claws and take down the
TWC with Eviscerators as well. I realize that my positioning is bad because Lukas has a chance to Last Laugh both of my Canonesses. Luckily, it fails to go off and I dodge a bullet (It was hard to tell the model itself was Lukas as well, I had thought it was a normal Blood Claw). In the other assault only a few
SoB’s, Veteran Superior and a Flamer are left and I need to get to them in order to take the objective by Turn 5. My
JP Canoness consolidates towards the combat while the other moves towards the lone power fist marine in the distance.
I realize the running
SoB squad rolled too poorly in terrain to make it anywhere so they start claiming terrain pieces. In my turn I wreck the rest of the speeders and Melta one of the nearby Rhinos blocking my other squad. I take down the last marine and then hit the Grey Hunters with an Immolator, killing about half of them and forcing a leadership check which they promptly fail. The
JP canoness tries to bail out the four remaining
SoB, and everyone goes Invulnerable. I take down everyone but the Rune Priest but still lose combat due to the number of
SoB that were killed. The veteran Superior breaks but the Canoness stays put preventing a sweep. I flee 3” right next to my empty Rhino…
Turn 5
The Broken grey hunters flee off the board and the other Rhino moves to continue being annoying with my last transportable squad. We move right into
CC where the Canoness kills the Rune Priest and that is it.
I regroup my single Veteran Superior with Light of the Emperor, hop into my Rhino and drive onto the objective. The other Rhino squad can finally make it partway there, so if it had gone one more turn I could have take the objective then. Luckily, I regrouped that
SoB because the game ends. I win Primary, Secondary, Tertiary and get full bonus points for a 48 point Massacre.
Score – 55 Points
