I just wanted to know if it is a viable tactic to list combi weapons for space marine Sternguard as simply combi-weapons on the army list, then represent them using pistols, making them interchangable without needing 125 army lists for each viable configuration?

Firstly, for any setting where you must stick with an army list then you would require to specify exactly which combiweapons the squad has and stick with it.
Secondly, pistols are not a replacement for combiweapons for any setting with a WYSIWYG requirement.

Feel free, however, to model them generically which is what it seems you are trying to do. Just be mindful to inform your opponent which weapons are which.
I would make a single army list with combi loadout A, B, C (of equal points) and just let my opponent know which loadout is being used. That way you can use almost the exact same list for multiple configurations.

That was the idea, but now I'm confused.
Which way is right? To interchangable Combi Weapon, or to not interchangable Combi Weapon, that is the question.

Are you talking about tournaments? Pick-up games? Friendly games? For tournaments, your army list must specify and (usually) the models must be correct. For pick-up games, your army list will need to specify. Models depends on how strict your local environment is about these things. A pistol is definitely not a suitable representation though. For friendly games, do whatever you like as long your opponents are okay with it. However, if you are using non-WYIWYG models then not having an accurate army list is a real problem. Leads to forgetfulness and/or accusations of cheating.

More friendly games, but yeah. I mainly wanted to know so I could make an all-comers marine horde list. Either way, thanks a lot everybody.
