Hi there,

My IG army is going to be the first army I make as I come back to 40K (I left around middle of 3rd ed). I would love some advice on how to adjust my army list and trim down the points to 1,500 pts. I wanted a list that's competitive but isn't one of those IG armies that people hate to play. I don't really want to do the veteran spam that seems to be very effective.

1,590pts
Company Command Squad 270
Powerfist
Regimental Standard
Plasma Gun x 3
Astropath
Master of Ordinance
Officer of the Fleet
Chimera

Lord Commissar 85
Powerfist

Platoon Command Squad 125
Meltagun x 4
Chimera

Infantry Squad 120
Plasma Gun
Chimera

Infantry Squad 120
Plasma Gun
Chimera

Infantry Squad 120
Plasma Gun
Chimera

Heavy Weapons Squad 105
Lascannon x 3

Heavy Weapons Squad 75
Autocannon x 3

Veteran Squad 155
Melta Gun x 3
Chimera

Vendetta 130

Leman Russ Battle Tank 150

Medusa 135

My basic strategic plan is to have my CCS, LC, HWSs and one sacrificial IS in out of their vehicles in a big blob. Keep two IS and the Vets in their Chimera for objective hunting and the vehicle to put the hurt where ever it's needed. Any advice on the list or my basic strategy would be very helpful. Thanks.

Well for not wanting to do vet spam you seem to have similar list that uses bs3 platoons instead that will be far less effective.

At 1500 take only 1 command. If your guys are all in chimeras the lord commisar is a waste as his ld10 won't really be used.

Drop regimental standard.

Drop MOO. He never hits.

Only take the astropath if you plan on reserving or outflanking.

If you want a pile of guys in chimeras get vets.

If you want an infantry platoon i'd drop the chimeras, and blob em. Give em power weapons and a commisar. Leave your CCS, PCS, and vets in chimeras. Use the points saved on more mech vets, heavies, or another detta

it's well-intentioned, but I agree with some of what's said. For one, there's no way that a CCS should ever cost more than 200 points at the absolute most expensive. It should just be special weapons, and the adviser that will actually help you the most (if you even bother with any of them).

That and there is no good purpose for the HWSs to be there. Turn those squads into their AV12 equivalent.

Also, there really isn't much purpose to the lord commissar here.

I'd recommend dropping the lord commissar, most of the junk from the CCS and the HWSs and turn it into a vet squad with a chimera and a vet squad to ride in the vendetta. Any extra points could be used for something in the HS slots.

I looked at the advice given and modified my list like this:

1,500 pts
Company Command Squad (165)
Plasma Gun x 4
Chimera

Platoon Command Squad (125)
Meltagun x 4
Chimera

Infantry Squad (85)
Power Weapon
Plasma Gun
Autocannon

Infantry Squad (85)
Power Weapon
Plasma Gun
Autocannon

Infantry Squad (85)
Power Weapon
Plasma Gun
Autocannon

Veteran Squad (100)
Melta Gun x 3
In a Vendetta

Veteran Squad (85)
Grenade Launcher x 3
In a Vendetta

Vendetta x 2 (260)

Leman Russ Battle Tank x 2 (300)

Medusa (135)

Hydra Flak Tank (75)

I'm not sure if the Hydra is worth it. I had 105 points left and I got a Hydra and gave my Infantry Squads Autocannons. Also, I'm not sure if grenade launchers are worth it. I included them mostly as a monetary decision since I will have tons to spare. Please let me know what you think. Thanks for the help!

oh, really close. The only problem is the infantry. Without a source of stubborn, they will instantly break and run first close combat (or round of shooting, for that matter) that they come across. Swap out either the plasma guns or the power weapons in order to give one of those squads a commissar so that they can blob up when need be. It will even cause them to hear orders better.

Otherwise, the only thing wrong with the list is the second vet squad. You've really got to find at least 15 points to upgrade the grenade launchers at least up to meltaguns.

Looking much better. Maybe drop a russ and add a second hydra since two russes shooting at the same target can be a little over the top while one hydra can be under powered. You could also drop the hryda. Either way with pointsvsaved consider Marbo. He's pretty bad ass. That saves 10 points. Maybe drop the chimera on the PCS. Used saved points for melta upgrade on vets, a commisar for blob squad, power weapon in PCS. If there are any points pick up melta bombs for sarges maybe, or plasma pistol for commander
