Hello good people! After around 5 years of battling with my trusty CSMs, I've recently been taken with the desire to start playing with the meat shields of the Imperium, i.e. the Imperial Guard! jk

The thing that really made me pick Guard was their difference to Chaos: numerous vehicles, huge squads of squishy little men, and mostly the large variety of builds within the Codex: Horde, Mech, Hybrid, Tank Heavy, etc.

Although Russes are awesome, I am really inspired to do an Air Cav force, especially after watching Apocalypse Now . so my question to you, DakkaDakka, is an all-airborne list silly and daft? And what support options would I need for such a force? Also any general advice you have on playing Guard is welcomed and wished for!

Thanks!

No, but it can be kind of tricky to play on the field.

The core of an air-cav list should look something vaguely similar to...

CCS, 4x melta, astropath

3x plasma vets
3x plasma vets
3x plasma vets

Vendetta
Vendetta
Vendetta

For vaguely like 900 points (I dont' have my codex on me). Then, you have to decide on where you want to go from there. You could do part-air-cav, part mech, which sees the CCS take a chimera, and a load of other AV12 vehicles on the field (with perhaps a russ). You could also, if you wanted, do PURELY air-cav, which would see you taking two more plasma vet squads, and running with 4 vendettas and 2 valkyries everything in squads of two.

Basically, you're relying on mass outflanking to always apply a buttload of hurt on one place right away in an alpha strike, and then keep on using your mobility to keep local fire superiority. It works, but it involves you buying a lot of valkyries, and a lot of special weapons.

My suggestion would be to start with a 1000 point list of a valk added onto the above list and see how you like playing with the flyers.

An all airmobile list can get pretty crowded on the table - you'll be looking at 6-8 large skimmers minimum.

You may want to have a look at Imperial Armour 8 - there's an airmobile guard army list in there with a variety of options not available to a codex list.
