So I'm planning to add Strakhov into my Khador army and I've heard about this tactic. How does this little trick work? I'm guessing that it's a combo of Superiority, Overrun, and the feat but didn't know if there was anything else that I was missing.

Superiority on Spriggin (the Heavenly SPEAR part).
Overrun on Strakov or Devestator to start the combo (in killing something)

Likely Strakov so he can charge something, kill it, Spriggin moves up, Strakov sprints closer to the enemy and feats.

Spriggin flies in and impales enemy caster.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

And because of Bulldoze, the Spriggan can likely get through models to get to the caster.

Something i was always curious about.

Is there a downside to using beast 09 over spriggan?

For low def targets his mat will hit just fine and against high def ones, instead of powerful charge, he could just burn a focus for murderous and boost ALL his hitting.
I know next to nothing about how heavenly spear works (in that I've never tried it) but it sounds like beast would be a little better.

I was wondering about that same thing too. I have the Beast already and I'm honestly not a fan of the Sprig (model, not it's rules). I understand that bulldoze is part of the setup to blow through to the caster.

I think bulldoze is a key component in the combo, allowing the sprigg to get easier access to the enemy caster.

I would rather have beast just because he is a better jack, more versatile etc etc, you could always just butcher your opponent's infantry instead of bulldozing right for the assassination. You could call it, the heavenly axe or something...

Regardless, heavenly spear seems very situational.

TBH, I've heard theorymachine about bulldoze working, but since it's "directly away", the odds that the positioning will make it matter are pretty slim because things in a pretty good percentage of the front arc aren't going to be moved out of the way of a large base.

I'd go with beast personally.

that is true, but it does allow the spriggan to get an extra couple of inches closer to the caster, and sometimes, that is all you need. I have never used the sprigg, but I may give it a shot since I purchased strakhov the moment he came out retail. He is a solid caster, and the heavenly spear is just one strategy that works well with him.

The sprigg seems too expensive for his stats, sort of like cygnar's centurion, However, the spriggan has the only reliable way to purge stealth in khador's entire army, so, maybe hes worth it after all.

Plus the Spriggan gets +2 to attack on charge attacks, which can really seal the deal on high DEF casters.

Personally, i think it's a wash over which is better, beast or the Spriggan. It comes down to personal taste, methinks.

Personal taste, that means I have to make a decision and can't blame it on the internets. Nuts to that.

heavenly spear over beast 09 is a common argument. i normally go for beast just for the imprint, since we have alot of high DEF casters in my area so i like to make sure i hit.

my center for strakhov is usually beast or spriggan matched with Big B.

There ain't nearly enough Salvage in this thread!

People playing what they want to play, as opposed to what the internet tells them to play? Harumph!

I used Strakhov in a tourney recently and took Beast, and I found myself missing bulldoze (I had been using Sprigs in warm-up games). You could always split the difference and take both. It's not like you need much else besides a War Dog for Strakhov to charge on feat turn.

Finally, on the big turn, cast overrun on the 'jack that's going to be doing the work that turn. It's a lot easier (especially with Sprigs) to put Overrun on him, charge him 13", vaporize something with the shield, then trigger Overrun and make the 6" advance that no longer has to be in a straight line to bulldoze stuff out of the way and get into 2" reach range of their caster, then take your initial Spear attack (no charge bonus though...), and have three focus to seal the deal with additional spear swings. It's a lot easier to line up a charge on a chump who's kinda close to the caster, then muscle your way through afterward, then to try and have Strakhov charge something and try and line up the long charge from the 'jack. Bonus, you don't even need to get the enemy 'caster into Strakhov's feat, just any chump that'll die to a MAT8, POW15 charge swing. And if their 'caster has a high def, just throw Superiority on Beast instead, execute the same turn sequence with Beast spending one to imprint if necessary. Three POW19s at MAT9 with three dice (and a chance to crit freeze) should be more than enough to put a high-DEF (and generally low-ARM) 'caster in the dirt.
