I played a game against a newer IG player last night. It turned into a real rout, but he made many mistakes in list building, deployment, and tactical execution due to his newness. Hopefully I provided a somewhat decent learning experience for him. You can see the full report at: Gone to Ground.

I am interested to hear what people think. I am not the best at spotting list building errors with IG as I don't have much experience with them, but having half of the army sunk into heavy slots that are nowhere near optimal probably hurt him a lot. He also didn't adequately equip his veteran squads. Can you spot anything else he did? Thanks for the input.

I think his list is flat out illegal, in addition to being just plain bad.

company command squad- commander with plasma pistol/powerfist, vox, medic, 2x bodyguards, master of ordinance
8 ratlings
infantry platoon- commissar
- special weapons team- 2x plasma, 1x melta
- special weapons team- 2x sniper, 1x flamer
- heavy weapons teams- 3x lascannons

2x vet squads- 4+ armor upgrade, 2x chimeras

His "platoon" is illegal. It looks like he subbed vet squads for platoon infantry squads.

A platoon has a platoon command squad, at least two infantry squads and 0-2 SWSs and 0-5 HWSs.

His command squad is tooled up to be a close combat unit, which it isn't. He has 1 vox in the entire army when you need at least 2,and is MoO require the command squad to stay still while the rest of the squad wants to close. I agree with you that he's a little too invested in his tanks, spendng 1110 out of 2000 points on tanks is probably a bad call.

It also sounds like a bit of a list mismatch. It looks like he built his list for taking on horde style armies (that or lots and lots off foot flogging terminators).

The funny thing is also that he wanted lots of terrain which actually helped me to prevent damage to my units while taking his out fairly easy.

Yeah, that's in the running for worst guard list you can field. Furthermore, as stated, it's not legal.

Guard lists, built properly, can trash space wolves. In this case, your opponent barely stood a chance given the list he brought. If his on-field skills were as poor as his off-field skills, well, I'd be really shocked if you didn't just wipe him off the table.
