Milliput can be thinned into a paste with regular old tap water. I've heard people recommend prepping metal minis with a very thin layer of Milliput painted on the surface to fill tiny surface imperfections, which is far thinner than you'd need, for your purposes. Shouldn't be too hard to mix up something of a similar consistency to spackle/drywall filler that could be easily spread over the surfaces, filling in the grooves of the wood grain without adding to the size of the object.
