Subject: Would I be accused of flavour of the month if I bought GK?

Now, I have always loved GK, and the hope of new plastic GK terminators and power armoured marines leads me to but one option, I must buy them. Not to win because they are awesome, but to field the army I have always seen as my choice race.
I would not field the WAAC list (most likely a spam of storm ravens) or anything like that, Id probably field maybe 10 - 20 terminators (termie heavy list TFG or?) and 20 - 30 power armoured knights, a decent HQ (most likely unnamed, perhaps stern), a land raider (cant not have a land raider?) and some dreadnoughts.
If I rocked up to a local GW and you were standing there and I got out some (most likely unpainted at the time) GK would you go "*facepalm* oohh my god." or would you be excited to come up against a new race or what?
Thoughts?

I really couldn't care less what your motivations for picking your army were.
Do you have models? Do you know the rules? Anything more than that is irrelevant.

I think you're taking liberties at guessing what the WAAC list will be. It's hard to say at this point. I'd imagine some people will accuse you of flavour of the month crap, but I imagine people will accuse me of the same, and I have enough points of pewter DH to run a 3000 point list right now.
It comes down to the old philosophy: Cheese is whatever your opponent is running. Fluff is whatever you're running.

My question is: why do you care what your opponents think of your chosen army? The worst they could do is choose not to play you - and, to be honest, if someone is going to get annoyed that you like a certain army that happens to be new, then I doubt it'd be a particularly fun game anyway.
I wouldn't care what army you pulled out on the other side of the table. As long as you know the rules, have a legal army and are an enjoyable opponent, everything else matters little to me.

if you like them and think they are cool, yes...
if you are trying to justify why they are not going to be your "flavor-of-the-month" by telling us you are not picking some of the potentially cool things about them, maybe...

Switching to take advantage of a new, overpowered army list is bad. Anything else is fine.

Does it really matter what others think of your army? I mean seriously it's a game, updates for old armies come out and people buy the armies and there is nothing wrong with that. Your reasons for getting your army are your own and other peoples opinions don't really matter.
And 40k is a game, the ultimate objective of games and most gamers is to play them and win or at least play them and do well. So if someone buys a new army because of it's update in rules and power because they want to win games there is absolutly nothing wrong with that considering every new codex is going to be more powerfull then the others untill the rules change.

There is something wrong with that because you're sacrificing variety and interest to compete in a zero-sum game. You playing the army you like doesn't stop me playing the army I like, but you playing an overpowered army does make everybody else's armies underpowered in comparison.

No issue with it. Stop worrying about what others would think or justifying your choice. Just buy what you want to play.
Then the new GK stuff comes out, they'll likely have plastic power-armored and terminator models and will sell like hot cakes because (1) they'll look cool, (2) Many people hate working with metal figures, (3) more variety.

Who cares?
I have 2k of Daemonhunters now. Never won a game with them, I don't care. I love the fluff, I love them models, I love the opportunities it gives me to convert models.

I'm sure some people would think you're just going with the "flavor of the month", but why should you care? If you like GK, then freaking go for it!

Lots of people saying who cares. My gaming club are also my friends, and its annoying when they get annoyed because they think I only play to win.
Obviously buying the newest and most overpowered (assumption) army isnt going to help that situation. Those who say "who cares what they think, as long as they play" are slightly out of line.
*VENT*
And for the love of all that is holy, stop saying its just a game! Its got more impact on our lives than any of you are willing to admit, and the reason for this is the huge sums of money we spend on this.
Call of duty is just a game, WOW is not. Money is real, therefore the impacts are REAL. If you make a bad army choice in 40k, its like getting a year subscription to an MMO you hate.

The only way i'd even care is if you did it with every army that came out, turning up with that one army until the next one comes out, at which point your previous army is never seen again until their codex is updated, when they suddenly re-appear in the most cheesy set-up possible.
I assume that you're not TFG, so I probably wouldn't be bothered; in fact, i'd probably have the same army; GKs have always been interesting to me, what with their cool knight-style armour and 'army of one' bad-assery. They wouldn't get along well with my CSMs though ¬.¬

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Ok so then no one should ever buy a new codex (which will undoubtidly be more powered then the older codices) just because some people will gripe that the army is too strong so everyone should just get a weaker army.
There is nothing wrong with buying an army that will allow a player to win considering that as a game the goal is for one person to win. Every army can be beaten no matter how powerfull. Just because some people like to whine about an army dosen't make it wrong for someone else to have it.

If you like the models and the fluff (which from your posts, you do) then I see nothing "flavor of the month" about it. If you just bought Dark Eldar, and whatever army came out last, and now bought Grey Knights, well...debatable.
I hate the flavor of the month accusations. If you chose an army that just came out, it doesn't mean you're going flavor of the month (necessarily) just keep playing (and loving) those Grey Knights months after they come out and those accusations will stop.
I say go for it mate.

Holy gak that is an awesome username. Please tell me your army is called Kabal of the Fragile Breath. Morathi's Darkest Sin has some competition here for best handle, I think. |
