Recenlty I took my much younger 9yr old brother with me to a doubles tourney. Quite honestly it realy did raise a spark in him. He is not bugging for GW paints for christmas to finish painting his Tyranid army that he didnt when he was younger.

Tonight he is coming around my house whilst mums watching Harry Potter. I am taking advantage for this to have another battle to see where his interest lies and where he would want his army to go. By letting him entirely write from scratch his first 750pts and having the battle on a "Proxy Software" he can field what ever he wants. Hopefully this will show which way he would want to take his army. [MC/GauntSwarm/FlyngCircus etc]

I poped by mums whilst he was asleep and she gave me his currently wrtten list. It consisted of a Prime, 3-4 Warrior Squads 2 Shrikes and a small Ripper swarm. Everything equiped with DualBoneswords [for 10pts per squad not model...] And a single venom cannon.

For everyone who does not know of Nids, Warriors can be easily insta-gibed by any str8+ weapons. Even moreso if it comes as a template. And additionaly his anti tank is a single small Venom Cannon...

I origionaly built a balenced Guard Target list. Fielding a Prime Psyker two penals and a Valk and Vend each with StormTroopers inside. On now seeing his list, I fear the two airships will stuff him properly. And quite honestly anyone in most future battles will do the same.

Obviously I am going to explain to him that an army on Warirors is dodgy, also lacking any anti-tank will not do too great. But who should I help him fix it. Should I?:

-Strongly suggest in not building an army around Warriors, instead focus on the other builds. (Stealers/Tervigons/MC)

-Let him be, but watch as 3-4 years down the road his all wariror army is getting stuffed.

-Try and pass with mass rending in his army, even suggest parasite with the Shrike brood. Will come in handy with all the ripper swarms he will be having after soo many warriors.

-Try and pass some non warrior Anti tank such as Hive Guard. Or possibly a few supporting MC's in an attempt to draw enemy fire such as the TyrannoFex

You know, I would let him have his warriors. At that age, it's the idea of something really cool that is doing it for him.

As an advanced player, you might want to consider playing at a serious handicap to level the playing field. It doesn't mean you have to build crap lists, but instead go with some battle missions where there is a clear advantage to one side over the other. Make it a challenge to yourself to see if you can beat him with some serious gimping to your own forces/deployment/etc.

The win will feel good if you pull it off and he will feel like you are really into the game and not just letting him win. It will also keep him interested if you aren't beating the stuffings out of him at every game.

It's the general tactic I take with young beginners and I find it a lot of fun. I might take a 250 point handicap or give him a serious deployment advantage and see what he does with it.

It's just 750 pts. Drop the skimmers from the test list and give him a good fight.

Once he's got those 750 pts built and painted you can direct him towards some solid anti-tank for the next block of points.

I couldnt agree more with this. The prime in a warrior squad is a nice unit though for character killing. Maybe in time get him to branch out with some gaunts/gants and monstrous creatures.

He needs some hive guard, other than that let him go crazy.
