What is the official ruling on using a Barbed Hierodule as a Tyrannofex in a standard game of 40k? Since there isn't a kit, how many folks on here would disapprove of such a large model being used in it's place?

Been out of the game for awhile, trying to find time to get back into it.

its all about the base size man. No bigger than the trygon base is what I would say if I was playing you

The trygon base is 60x100 mm oval base. The base supplied with the barbed hierodule (my avatar) is 100 mm round. All told neither model gets cover saves from anything but Venomthropes, it seems.

Welll wit the 2 up armor save, the tyranofex should be giving cover to units, not getting it. User your tyranofex to shield your tervigon and other MC's, and then use your tervigon to allow the tyranofex the ability to move, run, and shoot.

That can be quite devastating as you approach your enemy.

Certainly. Using carnifex kits for my tervigons (well one tervigon is from a trygon kit) allows me to move them forward behind trygons and tyrannofexes for cover, but typically i don't use the t-fex very often.

I wish they would make a plastic kit for one though!

The heirodule is probably a little big but closer, I suspect, than a carnifex.

I imagine that when (if) GW makes a multi-part plastic kit for the tyrannofex/tervigon the finished model should be taller and fatter than a carnifex (for both models) yet shorter than a trygon. Hierodules are shorter than trygons and very wide, though a standard model for a regular game of 40k will most likely be a touch shorter and thinner. Time will tell, and at this point nobody i play against has had any real issues with the large model 'proxying' the gunbeast, as most of the weaponry (rupture cannon, stinger salvo, thorax swarm) is actually represented in some form.

I wouldn't have a problem with it, though I am a Tyranid player so perhaps my opinion is slightly self-serving.

I am converting 2nd hand Carnifexes to Tervigons.

I want to do a Tyrannofex, and I agree it should be a significantly larger beastie than a Carnifex.

While on this subject. I'm playing a genestealer cultist army, with counts-as-tyranids-rules. I am using a liberated arbites rhino as a tervigon and I plan to use an obviously repainted Leman Russ for Tyrrannofex.

Would that tank be of roughly the appropriate size or am I going to have to do some serious modifications?

Shouldn't that be no Smaller than a trygon base; the tyrannofex is supposed to be huge(bigger than a Carnifex) so mounting on the same "footprint"(Base size) as a Carnifex is a little odd; having it on a 100mm round or 100x60mm oval base seems appropriate.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

More than likely as trend dictates most often it will be the Large Oval as it's a 6wound critter

The Trygon is physically a larger model than the Carnifex and needs all of the big oval base. It would overbalance if built on a 60mm round base.

I don't think anyone would have any serious claim to argue against this. In fact, most tournaments have a clause allowing you to use a Forgeworld model to represent something in the codex, so I think this sounds like the perfect fit to me until GW comes out with something official.
