I'm going to be starting Dark Angels soon, and need some help from veteran players. I currently have 1 Squad of Veterans and the Codex, but thats about it. I need tips on what to buy, tactics, anything even loosely related. And, i cant decide myself so i'll ask you lot. Should I paint em standard DA colours, or Guardians of the Covenant style?

Easiest way to get started and get lots of models (cheaply) is Ebay. If you want to buy straight from GW, the best way to start your forces would be with the chapter upgrade pack-you get 10 marines for 20 bucks, just without meltagun, plasma gun, flamer and missile launcher (and bases). That should round out your tactical marines quite a bit. Also consider picking up the ravenwing box set-you get 6 bikes, a land speeder and an attack bike for 90 bucks. Each bike is normally 15 each, the land speeder is 30, and the attack bike is 25. That means you get the land speeder and bike for free. Those are 2 quick ways to build up your army with GW purchases that won't ruin your pocket as badly as other boxes. Also, I'd suggest trying to split a box of Assault on Black Reach with a friend, and giving him/her the Orks, which will give you 10 more tacticals, a dreadnaught and 5 terminators. As for painting, do it up however you like. Your taste is what matters.

If you want squads fast, buy a single Devastator Box and just fill out the rest with Dark Angel Chapter Upgrades. A single Devastator box has a ton of heavy weapon options and other SM upgrades, while as mentioned before the Chapter Upgrade has many units on the cheap, and you can fasion flamers and melta guns easily from the pieces on the devi sprue.

Hmmmm. I already have spare devestator bits from my old squad, so i'll put some in. Thanks for the tip about the chapter upgrade, i'll be getting that. I'll be mixing and matching a few veterans within my units of ultramarines, until i get enough to field individual DA squads without proxying UM. And I'm gonna get that Ravenwing battleforce asap lol, its a bargain

Two Ravenwing Battleforces + a master of Ravenwing makes for a full 1000 point army actually.

Hmmmmm. I'll have to think, but i'll probably end up getting that lol. Sammael is a cool-looking miniature. and I'm still undecided on my colour scheme.

That's what I'm getting. There was a sale on Sammael. Alternatively just buy an extra Land Speeder and use the Ravenwing sprue's extra bitz to make Sammael on Speeder.

Both models are rather impressive. Sammael on Jetbike also has the pseudo-eternal warrior rule, and his profile is not too shabby for a pre 5th-ed Captain.

Yeah, i wish the DA codex was newer, as Azrael, Belial, sammael, ezekiel and all other hq units's weapon skill and things are worse than a 5th edition SM generic captain :/ But that's just the way it is, i suppose. Anyway, i think i'm going to go with Guardians of the Covenant pattern for them.
