I have been sitting on these a while now, and everywhere I go, people ask me how I got these. I figured I had an obligation to save the 40K community some money as a whole.

I stumbled on these one day at Hobby lobby while looking for other odds and ends for war gaming. They are decorative wooden balls made for god knows what and they cost about 12 to 14 dollars each.

Essentially, I just used a table saw to flatten one edge so that it sat flush on the table, "please don't try this with a hand saw or skill saw", cutting a spherical object is not very stable, and could lead to injury.

I then primed it white, painted the carapace section astro grey, and then gave it a blue wash. I used gripon sepia for the interior sections over white. Both colors needed 2 thick coats to achieve the affect.

After everything dried I then sprayed it down with a high gloss polyurethane coat to give it that slimy look.

Here is the flat edge I was talking about.

Now here is another one I did for marine drop pods. I don't recommend taking these to a tournament, but if you are just experimenting with a drop pod army, these are to scale so you can see if that $35.00 investment is worth it.

Basically, its just 2 peices of PVC pipe I got from home depot. 3 or 4 inch pipes if I remember correctly. I then painted it with blue spray paint and then printed out a a flag I saw online and glued it to the thing. Total cost of the project was like 10 bucks with the spray paint and I got 3 pods out of the deal.

Overall footprint is about the same as the plastic one GW sells.

Even then, people were using that design from 3rd ed to 4th ed when drop podding used a 5" blast marker.

I just point players in my club to the old GW France templates for pods.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

Sorry but even after it's painted and got the decals it still looks like some PVC pipe painted blue with stickers...

When I was experimenting with Drop Pods I just used beer bottles

Stick something vane-like on it, just cut from some card or something, placed at a regular interval around the sides to disguise the shape. Foamcore(Foamboard) does great for doing finishing details.

This is OT, but I have that same keyboard at home.

Back on-topic, nice ideas, maybe a little refinement, but for quick on the go and down and dirty you could totally use these.
