My friend recently went to a local GamesWorkshop store where the owner filled his head with nonsense, or so I believe. They discussed the necron phase out rule and how it works, and the owner was instant that only necrons that where actually on the table count towards your total number of necrons. Therefore by this guys ruling, if you had all your necron units reserved except for one and that unit was destroyed you would phase out if no new necron units come onto the table. The chances of all this happening are rather slim unless your playing against someone with very strong alphastrike abilities.

I know the faqs http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m1490294a_FAQ_Necrons_2009.pdf have a ruling on what happens if a monolith with warriors set to come out of the portal from reserves is destroyed. Basically Any units that were supposed to emerge from the monolith are destroyed.

I have always played as the total number in your army which I think it expressly states in the codex, however I could be wrong.... It's not likely though. i'm not sure if i'm allowed to quote the necron codex on this forum or any forum for that matter, and besides I don't feel like typing it all. So what do you think, phase out counts all Necrons in your list towards the total number of Necrons or only those on the table?

It is the total number in the army, NOT the number currently on the table.

This may stem from a common misconception that the game "ends" if you have no units on the table. This is patent nonsense, but fairly persistent....

First off, phase out is only calculated after all WBB rolls have been made.

Second, to phase out, 75% of the Necron force must be destroyed.

Models that are in reserve are not considered destroyed just because they are in reserve.

Models in reserve only count as destroyed if they are still in reserve at the end of the game. This was a house rule. A completely unnecessary house rule as it punishes necrons that really don't need more of a handicap.

They also count as destroyed if they were supposed to come in from a monolith and all your monoliths get destroyed, which could trigger phase out as well.

True because you have to declare how the will arrive when they are placed in reserve. If you decide to have them arrive through a monolith and all the monoliths are destroyed, you can't change your mind and have them come in from the board edge.

It would also mean that if you keep your entire army in Reserve, you would automatically lose the game at the start of turn one. Or that you could never phase out, since you can't technically ever be reduced to 25% of 0.
