Right, so here's a quick story I did up to give my regiment some life. I have the planet info all fleshed out, but I figure reading about history and stuff isn't as fun as reading about events. So here's a quick story about one of my sergeants.
Sergeant Illiar trudged along through the ash wastes of his home planet, Sailia. His light armour made soft clanging noises as he walked, his las-pistol swaying slightly with each step off his right leg. The sounds of his squad were similarly muted. The sounds of his respirator filled his ears with a calming, familiar rhythm. The dry wind blew dust and ash around his squad of nine other men, reducing visibility to less than fifty metres. Illiar looked around to see the rest of his platoon walking in loose formation through the valley. His lieutenant was walking slightly ahead with his squad of four men, relaying information to the rest of the company some hundred metres behind.
The platoon was the lead element of a company attack on a reported Chaos holdout. The target lay further up the valley in a small outpost once used for atmospheric testing. In Illiar’s briefing, the lieutenant had explained that a band of ex-Sailian guardsmen fell to the ruinous powers and have launched small raids into the nearby mines. Seemed like a simple mission to a well trained sergeant like Illiar. Illiar had never seen combat yet, but he was very successful in prior training assessments.
The lieutenant made a series of hand signals indicating the platoon to halt, while asking for the sergeants to meet up. Illiar ran up to the lieutenant’s position on the left side of the ancient river bed, approximately where the ground abruptly sloped upwards at a near sixty degree angle.
Lieutenant Elarian addressed his sergeants, “Alright, the target is approximately 75 metres ahead.”
He continued while drawing in the ash, “Entry points are here, here, and here. I want Illiar at the rear entrance, with Lusson and Flaeran on the side entrance. I’ll take the front with Hille’s squad.”
Illiar and the other sergeants nodded their understanding, “Approximate enemy strength numbers two dozen armed renegades.”
Elarian continued, “The company will wait in support in case anything goes sour in a hurry.”
Illiar noted a slight waver in Elarian’s voice at the mention of the mission possibly going wrong. It wasn’t easy taking responsibility for dead subordinates.
“Any questions?” asked the young lieutenant.
Each sergeant shook his head in turn.
“Very well then, we move in three minutes. Dissmissed.”
Illiar ran back to his squad to brief them quickly. They were all young privates except for his section corporal who wasn’t much older or experienced.
“We got the rear of the building to ourselves. We’ll go in by the book and clear these areas,” he explained, making a hasty diagram in the ash.
“Any questions?”
His squad shook their head.
“You have one minute before we head out, check your weapons and make any last minute preparations.”
Illiar pulled his chainsword out from its scabbard and drew his pistol. He made a last minute inspection of his jet black armour and deep red uniform. His white spats were grey from the ash, but he didn’t care. He turned back to his squad and ordered them to follow him. The whole platoon moved silently on to the objective.
The building was a plain grey two storey structure with nothing to pique anyone’s interest. A large door stood in the front, but Illiar’s target lay around the back. A series of scientific array and antennas sprouted out the top of the building haphazardly. As they approached the building, the squad saw large chaos marking scrawled across the walls in what appeared to be blood. Illiar shuddered. His squad ran around to the back of the building and waited for the lieutenant’s word over the comms network. The squad waited anxiously, lined up on both sides of the plain steel door. Illiar could hear the heavy breathing of his squad’s respirators and the nervous jiggling of the safety on their lasguns. He wiped some ash of his visor and waited. The command came over his headset and he signalled the lead private to breach the door.
With the door knocked in expertly, Illiar ran in with his squad following suit. He moved cautiously from one room to another, passing by chaos markings and other heretical items. He saw no signs of life. Emerging from what was most likely a storage room, Illiar discovered the stairs leading up. He signalled his squad to form up, then bravely made his way silently up the stairs. The dust stirred around his black leather boots, the lighting was patchy in the building, with the illumination provided by flickering lights. Illiar reached the top of the stairs and rounded the corner and came face to face with a renegade. He raised his las pistol to fire, but the heretic was faster. Illiar saw the barrel come to his chest level and watched his enemy pull the trigger before Illiar could level his weapon. There was a large discharging noise and Illiar was knocked back onto the floor.
He looked down to where he was shot and sighed inwardly. It was going to take forever to get the paint off his uniform. His squad carried on to clear out their designated areas, concluding the training exercise. Illiar was congratulated for good leadership until his unfortunate demise. His training was complete, and his platoon was being sent off to fight the wars of the Emperor soon.

That's it, let me know what you think. I'll put up the planet and regiment's info at a later time here. C & C if you can/want.
