Story: The Delta Hornets were secretly created by radical inquisitor named harkel, Harkel was convinced that the only way to defeat chaos is to use chaos against itself using his inquisitorial status he manged to acquire samples of the ultra marines gene-seed he spent years splicing & modifying the gene so it was well suited to the job by making it resistant to corruption of the mind, however this proved tiresome work & Harkel was forced to kill many of his fellow over curious inquisitors in order to cover his tracks.

20 years after he started the geneseed he worked on was complete he petitioned a new chapter to be formed out of his specially modified geneseed, the high-lords of terra selected several hundred candidates to be the first batch of marines as well as giving them 3 battelbarges to fight with much to Harkels disappointment, He silently watched his chapter grow in size & prestige he constantly pushed the chapter into many battles & campaigns he started to put his grand plan in effect when the chapter started losing more marines than gaining them. He supplemented their ranks with murderers,rapist & all types of other criminal scum. to him it did not matter the modified geneseed would make even the most convincing unbeliever into a worshiping fanatic

As inquisitor Harkel proceeded with his plans many started to question his loyalty to the emperor and the imperium on the way he was running the chapter like as if it was his own private army. Harkel was able to dismiss these claims by noting that these criminals & murderers are earning the repentance through eternal servitude to the emperor, the Delta hornets themselves were becoming much more violent often playing cruel torture games with captured enemies as well as killing many innocent civilians to the point where other chapters refused to fight with them.

The turning point came when Harkel introduced chaos worship through a slow & steady manner through many corrupt dealings he managed to get a massive shipment of chaos weaponry onto to the fleet of battle barges he gave as a gift to the chapter in order to strike down the emperors foes none of the chapter questioned the origins of the weapons. Harkels plan was coming into fruitrtion he headed back to terra in order to collect the rest of his modified geneseed which took about a few months of warp travel in this time the delta Hornets became completely corrupt by chaos however they were still loyal to the emperor due to the geneseeds traits having turned chaos meant that they had avoided imperium forces with the exception of inquisitional forces.

Over the next few months Harkel stored the modified geneseed in his personal Hq on a remote planet where he also monitored the chapter. Thousands of ork war bands were destroyed, a hive mind ship was destroyed at great cost, several tau attacks were foiled, several hundred chaos war-bands were annihilated or diverted into tau or ork territory , countless chaos cults were destroyed, several necron lords were put to rest again as well as many dark eldar raids were foiled by the Delta Hornets these were many of the reports that chapter master Akbal Reported to him on a daily basis who had some how achieved daemon hood though sometimes these reports were highly exaggerated

Harkels plan was a success he had successfully created a chapter that could harness the power of chaos without becoming its slave however harkel was recently declared a heretic by his fellow inquisitors and has since remained in undisclosed locations constantly moving & monitoring & supplying his chapter with thousands of weapons & dozens of recruits to keep them fighting.

The thing that confuses me is the exact nature of not falling to chaos and serving the emperor while going to the lengths of becoming a demon prince and similar dilemmas of that sort.. That could use some fleshing out.

I would also say that IF a chapter was able to harness the strengths of both factions like this one presumably has, then they could do more than "An under strength marine force"

what do you mean by unit, cos if you mean unit=10 man squad of marines, this is truelly ridiculous, chapters have 1000 men and that takes a while to make let alone the numbers you are suggesting. only the oniginal legions that turned to chaos have large numbers of marines.

the main problem is the deamon prince, not only would it mean a swift excommunication (even if they only attack enemies of the IoM) with a whole load of grey kights (no inquisitor has the power to protect a deamon prince, sure they can make a deamonhost or two, but they are quite likely to be killed for that alone). then there is the other side of the coin the chaos gods hate the emperor, and they wouldn't give deamonhood to a follower of the emperor.

-The Chapter is already excommunicated for use of chaos weaponary but they still fight for the emporah the geneseed overpoweres their thinking forcing them no matter what the circumstance is to be fanatically loyal to the emporah

-I mentioned before the inquisitor is never at the same place for more than few hours he is constanly moving from place to another & it is very hard to track he also has massive amount of resources he can work with which includes many safe houses, false identities, disguises that sort of thing

-it seemed tzeentch has smiled onto the chapter master knowing he will fit right into tzeentches eternal schemes & plots tzeentch gave him daemonhood, even though he is a follower of the emporer
