I've heard that honour guars are waste of points. Are my friends right or not. So tell me what makes them so bad or good?

BA Honor Guard is much different, pretty much a Command Squad for ANY HQ

Vanilla Honor Guard needs a chapter master and is basically a vanguard vet squad with PW

Codex space marines honour guard are not worth the points. They can't get an invunerable save so die once they hit combat which is supposedly their job (fighting in combat that is)

what makes them bad is that they could have been assault terminators. there's no need for a 2nd unit in that role.

Well if you happen to use all your elite slots on Dreadnoughts or Sternguard having the unit in an HQ slot is beneficial. Of course, realizing their invulnerable is based on a psychic test can screw them over at the worst times... AND it's only a 5+ so it's not going to be saving many wounds.

And though they may start cheaper than a Terminator squad, proper upgrades will easily carry them over.

Honor Guards are worth it in big games (2000 pts or more). Paying 115 for 5 of them is the same price as Vanguard Veterans, plus the cost of JP, PW, MB it will add up to 220 pts, so you have to choose them and thier role wisely.

This depends on the type of Honor Guard we are talking about.
C:SM Honor Guard=Terrible Failure
C:BA Honor Guard= Very usable unit

C:SM Honor Guard are far too expensive to ever really be an option in any game save an Apoc game where there are no point limits.

C:BA Honor Guard are nice with JP and 4x Meltaguns. you get to drop in pop an important tank, almost guaranteed, and you get a Sanguinary Novitiate with the squad putting out his bubble of FNP FC.

The only real reason to take honour guard is because of the banner... The banner brings +1 attack and lots and lots of lolz...

Until you realize that you could have taken assault terminators..

I second (third?) the statement that terminators are better versions of honour guard.. Less fluffy.. but better..

You're thinking of Command Squads, not Honor Guard.

Of the things you listed, Honor Guard can only take thunder hammers.

As for comparing them to Assault Terminators, Terminators' transport is quite a bit more expensive.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Unless you teleport them, DP small squads, infiltrate them with shrike, or stuff them in a landraider... And, let's be honest... a landraider is probably where you'd want your honour guard to go anyways.

Pretty much this. The Chapter Master and Honour Guard unit is awesome to run, but basically not feasible from a points perspective.

C:SM they are too expensive and more or less redundant for anything less than apoc.

They're basically an Anti-Infantry Unit. Fully upgraded though you're talking 710pts just for the unit. But if you're facing massive amount of Ork boys, this can be deadly. 3-4*10+1 Relic Blade attacks (or 4-5*10+1 pw str4 if facing Gretchin or other weak units) after a shootout of bolt pistols and Aux Grenades you could take out an entire Ork mob of 30 before they get a chance to react, or at least down to just a couple of units that probably aren't going to do anything against your 2+ save. If they then pass their leadership test than your Honour guard are protected from getting shot at by heavy weapons in you're opponents shooting phase. Then again a ork mob is anywhere between 180-400 pts, so you would expect a 710 unit to destroy them. But you could go through many more then just the 2-4 ork mobs if that's all you where facing.

Other then that, maybe to protect your master with 3 or more of them if your Elites and Fast Attack are full and you have pts to spare. Otherwise an Assualt Term Squad w/TM&SS you have a 2+ arm and a 3+ invun to protect your master, much better protection with the 3+ invun
