Hey guys!
This is my first post on dakka dakka, but not my first time playing, so don't be afraid to be harsh. This is the list for my new Army, the White Dragons. To start, a small bit of fluff about them:
They are a loyalist chapter who were created during the dark founding, but did not get corrupted except for their betchedler's glands, which created promethium instead of poison. As such they are a fan of meltas and flamers. They also like drop pods. I thought that if I wanted to get into writing more fluff, the partially corrupted geneseed would provide a nice base for it. Their colour scheme is white with blue shoulder trim and mithril silver aquila and markings. Anyway, here goes:
Vulkan he'stan (need help with a new name for him please)
Tactical squad
+5 men
Multi melta
Meltagun
Combi melta
Power fist
Tactical squad

Multi melta

Power fist
Tactical squad
+5 men
Multi melta
Meltagun
Combi melta
Power fist
Sternguard veteran squad
+2 men
Drop pod
Sternguard veteran squad

After this I have a spare 155 points. I was thinking about maybe a drop pod dreadnought, or maybe an assault squad or land speeders. Any and all criticisms / suggestions welcome.

Welcome to Dakka!
The List looks pretty solid, I think. Have you tried it yet?
For the 155 Points... what about a Dreadnought in an Imperial Armour 'Lucius Pattern' Drop Pod? That means the Dreadnought can Assault the same turn it drops!

sure if you wanna have to use imperial armour/forgeworld and not make any friends or be able to use it in most tournaments ...
For a standard marine list it's lacking mobility and transport.
I'd probably drop a sternguard unit to add some ranged firepower to the list, and some combi weapons on the sternguard.
Good additions would be rhinos for the 3 squads 105 points
maybe a couple predators, prolly go with autocannon/hb sponsons

I think the challenge is to design a competitive drop pod using "BURN IT WITH FIRE" army right mister OP?

Sorry about the mentioning of rhinos ... I missed the pods lol ...

your list is nice, but i would swap out those MMs for Missile launchers. you are more likely to use them during the game because the range of the Melta just means you won't be able to get a shot off since you can't move and fire.
a Drop Pod dred with a MM and HF would be a nice addition. i would also try to get either some Rhinos or Drop Pods for your Tactical squads.
drop the extra 2 guys on the Sternguard squads to give them some Combi-weapons. extra points can go towards transports.
a different name for Vulkan: how about Vorgnash Firebender. Firebender is the name your chapter gives to their chief artificer. due to mutations in the beltchers gland the marines are able to spit fire and in most the ability is fairly small, but a marine of sufficient age can summon a gout of flame that is great indeed. the Firebender must be such an individual(this justifies having Vulkans Heavy Flamer ability) and as his rank denotes he bears the great relics of the chapter, a Halbard dating back to the Great Crusade, a suit of Armor forged from pure adamantium by the first Firebender of the Chapter, and a cloak made from the hide of a great dragon that was slain on the chapters homeworld by one of the Firebenders in ages past.
you can justify Combi-flamers and flamers on any of your guys as being individuals that can breath fire in a more intense way then the others. would make for some nice conversions.

Whoah. Just - Woah. Honestly wasn't expecting 8 replies in the first day of posting, as opposed to LO's 1-2 posts in a week. Very nice ideas, too. From the top: - No-one I know has any objections to any IA units, but I dont have any of the books, so feel free to blast away on that part. - It's not going to be even remotely competitive, so no IA worries - Remember that the entire army has to be in drop pods according to their combat doctrines - I love the idea of Vorgnash Firebender. Do you do a lot of fluff? If not, you should! - The youngest person I play is 12, so 'Avatar' poses no worries for me. - I don't want his name to be corny, so Drake and Scalio are out of the queation. But other name ideas are welcome. - For lord PoPo's question, you are correct but it does not have to be too competitive. As for the actual army list changes, the MM -> ML idea seems solid; it provides AT and AI fire. I think it is a good enough change to warrant me changing the list completely. As for the MM and HF dreadnought, not a bad idea. But I will wait for more people to post other possibilities before jumping right in with it. Thanks for all the comments guys! You are all way more helpful than LO. I think I will stick with this forum.

Well, your fluff is sort of lacking so I can't help there. Would you like to give ideas on iconography, what kind of army/people/culture they're based on so we can give appropriate names?
For example: my Space Marines are called Solomon's Templars. Their color scheme is pretty much this:
They are the revival of the original Templars. And even though they serve the Emperor, they have still retained their former religion. That is why their iconography has Catholic elements in it, and their names are mostly found in the Bible. I also use a counts-as He'stan, and as fluff for that historically the original templars were burned as heretics. Now they use the fire that burned their predecessors to hunt and kill the real heretics. Something like that.
I agree on the dreadnought drop pod. Arm it with an MM and HF and it'll have fun dropping its merry way. And are the Pfists necessary? Seems to me that you can use those points instead to boost some of your tac squads into 10-men tacs. You'll sometimes (sometimes here meaning "lots of effing times") want your tacs to drop on objectives, and being a 10-man squad would make them harder to remove (if so, they're better of with MLs rather than MMs). This also gives you the option of combat-squadding and making the other half sit on an objective while the other half pounds the opponent. And aren't combi-flamers better than combi-meltas on your tacs, so that they it gives them the option of handling hordes as well? A twin-linked meltagun and a twinlinked combi-melta plus a twinlinked multi-melta seems like melta overkill to me. SMs are made to be versatile, so capitalize on that.
Also, the sternguards having no special weapons other than their special ammo is not using He'stan to its fullest potential. Maybe removing them in favor of Drop Pod Dreads (with MM and HF, of course) or giving them combi-flamers and combi-meltas would be more fulfilling.
|
Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess. |

Ok, reasonable ideas. They have very basic fluff; in the original list above it gives you an idea that they are very tied to dragonic ways, thus the promethium, vulkan et. and prefer to be up close and personal but still shooting for the most part. They rarely prefer any weapons but bolters, Meltas and flamers, along with their varients. The power fists are for when the squad inevitably gets into combat. I agree on the vehicle killing overkill; the PF's can take care of most, if not all vehicles in CC. I think it is completely stupid that Tac squads can't have HF's as the heavy weapon. Do you think that most people wouldn't mind if I took a HF for +10 points? If if so, I could just take out the MM and add a HF for an extra 5 points. the meltagun would be for helping against CC vehicles like dreads or defilers. maybe replacing a sternguard squad with a dread or finding some points for some combi love on the sternguard. Also, the tac squads are the original 5 men +5 men, thus why it says +5.

I personally really like your list (being a big fan of fluff because everyone is a SM)
I do have some ideas/suggestions
-Why not drop the extra four sternguard and put the two squads in a single drop pod (that means two sergeants) with combi stuff and power weapons/fists which would allow:
A- "Vulkan" and another HQ or maybe a Techmarine to go in the same drop pod
B- I also lets one tactical squad to go in a drop pod too
Assuming that you took my advice with 3 combi meltas/flamers per sternguard and two power weapons for the sergeants plus two techmarines with servo-harnesses you'd have 45 points left over, which could get you another drop pod or upgrade your tac squads with lascannons and such.
Hope that helped

Sternguard can take HFs.
in the old codex, Tac squads could take a HF as a heavy weapon if they took a certain chapter trait.
if your Group is fine with you taking a HF in your Tac squads then go for it. just have a back up Heavy weapon in case your opponent objects. 10 points seems fair for the cost.
the main reason HFs don't appear as an option is because HFs are an Assault weapon and 10 Marines that can assault after firing 2 Templates and 8 bolt pistol rounds could be viewed as OP. i personally would love this option.
@NamTaey: you can't put 2 different squads in a Drop Pod because it is a DT only. if DPs were just purchased seperately then you could, but as it isn't you can't. you can attach ICs, but, other then that, only the purchasers of the Pods can ride down.

Not a big fan of techmarines. I was thinking of having this:
Vulkan
Tac squad
10 men
Flamer
Heavy flamer
Power fist (X5)
Dreadnought w/MM
HF (X2)
Simple, but effective. the dreads take care of all the anti-tank, scince I play against armies lacking in heavy armour and anti-tank fire like 'nids, whilst the marines and vulkan provide a close range firefight, because as Grey Templar said they can fire 2 templates and 8 bolt pistols, than assault too. Evil.

@ NamTaey: Nice. I assume there are meltagun or LC squads in the chimeras for AT support.
@ Azrael: The reason I replaced the vets with the dreads is because the vets are, at the end of the day, still marines. 9 points more but still 3+. Dreadnoughts are better because they can only be damaged at all by some weapons.

Hey I myself play a drop pod heavy raven guard list so I thought I would give my 2 cents.
I like your list so far especially the dreads.
dreads are some of the most important members of a dp army and whenever I can i bring 3
with mm and hf these guys kill, I love to pop any tank left in the open on the turn it comes in (i love no deep strike mishaps (unless you go off the table))
and in subsequent turns really give my opponent a headache to draw away from my marines. plus if he rings his
tanks with men for a cover save you can just shoot your heavy flamers at the tank and *accidentally* hit the guys
around it, even better with tl heavy flamers.
Also I Never give tactical squads pfs I don't really like them getting into combats which I usually reserve for my
assault marines however in your case I see the value of them, two templates and 8 pistols will hurt especially backed by a charge
so i guess go for it.
I also think stern guard would do really good but you have to give them combi meltas to get your moneys worth
and they are no slackers in combat either. if you are forced to fight with them they have 3 attacks on a charge each.
Finally I think you should consider scouts a small 5 man squad with snipers and a rocket launcher will do
practically nothing all game but that is exactly the point, the 5 scouts that I have (my first 40k minnies btw)
have won me more games than I can count simply because with everything else going on my opponents generally forget them
or simply ignore them. simply deploy on out of the way objective and plink away, who knows they may actually kill something.
as for weaknesses the only thing dps do really bad against is a very fast mech that can run away after we pod down (eldar or deldar generally)
if this is the army you are facing try to get the best alpha strike possible and then build a fort out of dps on a objective or two
(which you cleverly put close together in his area) remember you are marines so with dp cover you should be able to hold on and
hope fully pop some of his tanks with rockets and such stuff. also always remember that the more pods you have the better because you
can bring more in in your drop pod assault, and also remember the best part of dps is a massive alpha strike that enemy cant counter and that like
daemons its best to have turn two not turn one and make your opponent wast a turn.
as for a name for vulkan He'stan
try nats'eh Nakluv
btw did you guys know that vulcan is German for volcano
I love how gw puts this kind of background into the minnies.
anyway after all that (wow! I didn't really realize i wrote all that so sorry(and sorry about all the parentheses))
all that is left to say is
GL and may your scatter dice roll many hits!
you know its to bad you cant land on the enemy with dps that would be fun
guess it would be a little op though!

Yes, but if you only have one dread then all AT will be going his way. You have no armor saturation so getting just one dread is a bad investment.

Once again, good comments all. Liking the name ideas; perhaps a foriegn name for fire, lava, volcano etc. but since I don't speak any foriegn languages, could people please give me some ideas on this part. I figured I could have 4 Tac drop squads and 2 dreads along with vulkan with 30 points left over. I could have 3 of the pods for 1000, maybe a dread pod too if I remove some stuff.

Got one: Spiritus Ignus; it literally means "fire breather". Or maybe Ignis Avari, whick means fire fisted, or Ventus Mortem, which means death wind. Fata Damnatis, Virtue Multa, Fatum Nihil and Fatalis Tenebris etc. etc. are all good names too.Liking the latin names; very cool.
