Hello.

My name is Don, I have been playing various miniature games over the past decade. I have always been a big Risk player and a terrible chess player over the years. I first started playing miniatures games with Mechwarrior and Heroclixs from Wizkidz and then moved over to Star Wars Miniatures, a game I still play regularly and am an active online community member over at swmgamers.com.

I live in Colorado USA, and have attended Genghis Con the past couple of years with the Star Wars Miniatures (SWM) group and have been to GenCon in Indy as well also for Star Wars. But maybe I'll meet some of you guys at one of those conventions in 2011.

Alright so why 40k? You all know, but anyway here you go.

I was always interested in 40k as a kid seeing it in hobby shops when I was buying model planes and cars with my dad. I've always had a thing for power armor, probably thanks to the Heinlein novel Starship Troopers, which I read way before the movie. And so the line of Star Wars Miniatures came to an end at WOTC and so I decided to try my hand at 40K. So I started researching the brand and found it to be a really well designed and thought out game. The rule book scared me at first as large as it was until I learned half of it was just cool fluff. So then I had to figure out what faction I wanted to play and while the Tyranids look amazing I decided to start with the marines as they seem to be the simplest and most balanced of the games many factions. I have no doubt that the Tyranids will end up on my table one day but for now the Marines it is. Of course then I had to decide which chapter, make my own or find a pre-existing chapter. This was actually relatively easy. I have always been a fan of yellow things, you can thank the classic Gen 1 VWbug Bumblebee for that I'm sure. So the sons of Dorn became my chapter of choice. Siege warriors, valiant defenders of the God Emperor during the great Horus Hersey and the proginators of two other very snazzy chapters the Crimson Fists and the Black Templars.

So I bought Black Reach and a Devastator Squad another combat squad and got my hands on a dreadnought and some other tactical support equipment for the first portion of my chapters army. Next up is the army box with the scouts, assault squad and the rhino. With that I'll be half way to a full company of infantry.

I have only played a couple of small games so no doubt you will see me in the army section browsing and in the rules areas asking lots of questions.

Thanks for letting me come and hang out here on these very fine boards

I have started. I have pics up on my facebook of what is already finished. I currently have 1 combat squad, 1 Apothecary, 1 bike and 1 Dreadnought finished. I also scratch built an auto-gun from an old WK- Mechwarrior "The Dark Age" Forestry Mech. I'm thinking of mounting a Servo-Skull onto it.

As for the painting, I don't mind it too much. I will say Ultramarines and Crimson Fists are way easier and I mean way easier. But I really like the look and think it is worth the effort. It does take 3 times as long to paint just as a point of note for you. I did one CF SM and one Ultramarine shoulder pad and it took an hour elapsed time for both. One IF marine takes probably close to 3 and a 1/2 hours elapsed time, not including the weapons, which I'm picky about.

I do believe it is worth noting that some folks use more of a gold and others a bit more brown in the IF units to help off set the need for lots of yellow. I also saw a really nice painting demo for them around here somewhere before I even started. But the biggest thing is to not base in black. I based the bike in black and it looks astounding, however it was way too time consuming. I base coated the Dreadnought in palomino gold 2 coats of that and then 2 coats of Sunlight yellow and it was done. The bike with the black required 2 coats palomino gold, 1 sandy yellow, 1 sunlight yellow and 1 clear yellow. Thankfully there was plenty on the bike that is not yellow. When I do any additional bikes or an attack bike I plan to undercoat the engine areas in black and the rest in the palomino gold.

Thanks for the question, hope you don't mind the long winded answer.

Hi, welcome to dakka !!

As to your painting, may I suggest a course of: Iyandun Darksun basecoat, followed by a sunburst yellow/badmoon (your preferance.) For the shoulder pad edgings ect, use mechrite red, folowed by blood red. paint the rest of the marine as you usually would.

Is that a games worskhop paint or a Reaper MS? I've never heard of it, but otherwise I'm way ahead of you with the sunburst and the mechrite followed by the blood red. And I'd be happy to try different methods to see what may speed-up the process.

Great to see a Imperial Fist player; it's a nice little break from the usual Ultras or Space Wolves. Welcome to Dakka!

Thanks, I agree. THere are 3 places in town where they play this and fantasy and I have never seen a Yellow Marine yet. But plenty of Ultras and Salamanders. I probably have seen the wolves too but didn't recognize them. Theres a store that has tons of their stuff. There are a few Black Templar players I know of and Grey Knights and at least 1 guy I have seen was running I think it was the Blood Angels with the 80 bikers in a company...

What chapter or force do you run? Like I mentioned in an Hour I did a CF top to bottom and a shoulder pad for an Ultramarine, the pad is at the foot of one of my IF troops with a large hole in it now.

And 7 hours for tank seems reasonable. Did you do the inside stuff to or just the outside? I remember painting an Enterprise D model from Revell as a kid and it took about that long.

Thanks for the heads up. First off, is there terminology thread some where around for the common abbreviations used around this place? I know a few from common sense and a lot of them seem to be worked in a way to provide the meaning with it, but is that always the case?

Thanks again. The site here amazing, there is just so much to assimilate in just this past week or so that I've been here.
