This is just something that has been bothering me the more I think about it. Please keep in mind that I'm fairly new at 40k.

People play 40k and spend a couple hundred dollars or pounds on a good army and then a new edition or new miniatures come along. Can you still use the old miniatures in tournaments and whatever else or do you need to start from scratch? It just kind of seems like the costs go way up if you've played for many years. Thanks.

I actually prefer the old plastic night goblin models. No doubt when a new edition or codex is released you will need to adapt your army or aquire some new models if they are released and beneificial but keep you old models. For example if you play Orks or Space Marines, you will always need tactical marines and boyz.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

it's perfectly fine to use the old models.

in the unlikely event that a certain model gets erased from the book or options get dropped(like my Librarian with a PF) then you will have to look for something else to do with the model.

But it is highly unlikely that GW will get rid of a model by making it so you can't field it.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.

It's perfectly fine to use old minis. Keep in mind that any tournament or store can set up their own rules, but as long as they models are WYSIWYG or a pretty clear counts as, you can keep using them.

Many of my Eldar go back to the mid 90's when they had awesome hair and armour that wasnt so darn flat. Sometimes new mini's can be a bad thing.

Currently collecting and painting Eldar from W40k.

Insect-Infested Nurgle Chaos Lord

There was the time when the metal Possessed caused alot of people ire since they were ugly as hell compared to Mutation Sprue-enhanced CSM (which was the only available alternative at the time). However older models do not mean that they are unusable. My Nurgle force contains a blend of Old and New Plague Marines and when given a uniformed paintjob it's very hard to tell them apart even at a medium distance. Sometimes though you'll find a new use for models. The 3rd edition Hive Tyrant would be perfect now as a Tyranid Prime, as it looks like a sized up version of the standard Warrior.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

As long as you can tell what they represent, it's all good. I use a Thudd Gun from 1993 as a Thunderfire cannon and nobody questions it.

Even Squats can be used. People use whole armies with the IG codex as the rules.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

There's actually some options in codices that can only be done with either conversions or old models. Take Tyranids as an example - Termagants with Stranglewebs and Spikerifles. Both of these options had metal Termagant models in 2nd edition. They've been kept in the codex, but model wise completely forgotten about.

I use original Grazghull for my orks. He's about a quarter of the size, but he has the same base and I make sure people know who he is. he's handy if I want to play him as a regular warboss too.

Trust me, old models are fine and sometimes better than the new ones. Just look at some of the old Orks.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

I know it's fantasy, but the same idea holds: the snake bodied champion of Slaanesh is from about 5th edition (maybe 4th) for Warhammer Fantasy, and it's still one of the best Slaanesh champions out there. There is definitely always a place for some of the old models. Others...best not to ever admit that you have them (like the old Lemartes). And I'm gonna get a roasting for that one probably...

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

You can use older miniatures if ya want. Usually they aren't as good though, in my experience. But that's a matter of taste.

They're GW models, so they're legal.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.
