I just thought I'd abuse my position here on dakka to highlight the latest issue of wargames illustrated:

as this month's issue is very nicely balanced and I wanted to highlight it for anyone who has been tempted to pick up a copy in the past or has been tempted by historical gaming slightly. This month is a good month to try it out. I think borders sell them in the US and WHSmiths sells them in the UK at least.

I wouldnt normally post this sort of thing and we would not normally tolerate it on dakka, but there have been many occasions where I have picked up non-GW magazines in the past only to be disappointed by lacklustre content. This one is especially readable and balanced compared to some of their other recent issues so I thought it worth mentioning for those of you who might want some more wargaming reading each month.

Here's a highlight of the content from the official site:
SENGOKU SHOWDOWN
To set the scene for this month’s Samurai theme, Brook Kill takes a closer look at the three leaders that brought an end to medieval Japan’s “Warring States” period. As well as the exciting history, we present plenty of ideas for bringing these leaders to the tabletop.

PAINTING YOUR SAMURAI
Brightly coloured Samurai warriors can seem daunting, but Jason Buyaki guides us through the best ways to get your Japanese army onto your gaming table.

LEGENDS OF THE RISING SUN
With a gaming table based on the classic Kurosawa film Yojimbo, we knew Aaron Loomis was onto a good thing. Read about his Legends of The Rising Sun house rules.

WARGAMING THE ARMIES OF CARTHAGE
Following up on his well-received treatise on using the Romans on the wargames table, Paul Leach digs up loads of information on the greatest “empire that never was”, the quintessential Republican Roman enemy, the Carthaginians.
BATTERY OF THE DEAD
Hungarian Assault Guns counterattack the Soviet invasion, in this Flames of War scenario.

THE BATTLE OF BUSSACO
General de Brigade Napoleonic rules author Dave Brown has supplied a great scenario to coincide with the release of the latest version of his rules - Bussaco 1810, which also happens to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the battle!

GUNS AND GUTS
In this article we explore the secrets of the tank destroyers, not only to better understand their contributions during WWII, but also to get to the bottom of the logic behind the tank destroyer rules in Flames of War.

FLEET OF BATTLE
We don’t publish rule sets very often so when we do they have to be good, and this set of rules for 1:200 scale naval combat is very good, just what you need for refighting sea battles in the Mediterranean, 600 - 31BC.

GREAT WARRIORS: 1918 STORMTROOPER
Our Great Warriors series continues with a look at the German assault troops of World War One.

MEDIEVAL MONSTER HUNTING
Give your medieval warriors some time off with a day’s hunting in the forests of 15th Century Poland. Bware - there maybe more than just foxes hiding in the undergrowth...

SCRATCHBUILDING A 15MM DESERT VILLAGE
Bob Murch returns to the pages of Wargames Illustrated with this great little piece on scratching together buildings for your very own North African village.

PLUS we take a look at the Colours 2010 (UK), The Phoenix Wargames Club (UK), and Barry Hilton talks
about his trip to Historicon (USA). Also, our Reviews return to the web.

Sounds good!

I gave up on WI a long time ago because there was only rarely something in which I was interested, and it was hard to find.

But, Samurai, 1/200 ancient naval... I'm in there!

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

I didn't even know there was such a magazine...
I've been getting White Dwarf mostly.
There's a mag on CMON but I bought one and at $17.00 kind of hard to swallow at that price.

Wargames Illustrated is now a much better magazine.

Battlefront (makers of Flames of War) purchased it, and changed it's format around a bit. They kept all the old material flowing, but upped the page count to add in more materials for FOW. They also brought in one of the best hobbyists, in the person of Mr. Dave Taylor. Dave is the US editor and doing a great job with it. The magazine is also enjoying much better distribution and is easy for US shops to get. I expect any shop that stocks FOW to carry it, and any store that deals in historicals. It's doing quite well in my store.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

It would be awesome if GWS also published a magazine with such stuff as how to paint their minis, and background material on their lore, and how to scratchbuild terrain, and had new rules and scenarios and stuff.

Probably super expensive to publish this as well as their monthly catalog, though.

Really stupid question. Lego normally wouldn't tolerate posting something like this because......? I mean, he can do what he wants and post rampant donkey porn should he so decide, but I just am not seeing why a post like this would normally be forbidden?

I'm speculating, but I think the rest of the sentence should have been "... In Dakka Discussions" as there already is a forum for non-gws wargames. However, they see far less traffic as compared to DD, so I think the "king's privilege", so to speak, is one of categorization, not content.

Advertising a well known, commonly available magazine in one of the most trafficked forums is a bit too spammy without exceptional circumstances, so that is what I was referring to.

While it has had a major revamp, from what I can see they are gradually turning it into a dreaded 'inhouse' magazine. I do get it but will be cancelling soon in favour of their rival Miniature Wargames who are more tolerant of non historical games and even have their own section for Sci/fantasy news. They also regularly do scenarios for scifi/fantasy, they are doing Hammer's Slammers games at the moment. I emailed Wargames Illustrated asking if they were going to cover non historical stuff: their reply was basically telling me to go forth and multiply and that if I was wanting to see coverage of Scifi/fantasy I would be best to try Miniature wargames, which I have so thanks WI!
Even if their reply was a bit rude!

Quick question lego: if a poster decided to actually do a pretty in depth review, say comment on every feature and do a full write up, would Discussions be the appropriate place to post it?

yes.

I haven't seen a WI in 10 years or so. I always thought it was great, how it was just articles by enthusiasts, not like it was looking to market anything, just gamers talking about gamer stuff. I wish I could find it around here.

Just wanted to say thanks for this.

WI is a magazine I enjoy reading, and more people on Dakka should be aware of it.

I especially liked the issues that had the Vietnam rules. Those were well done.

As reds8n said above, so long as it is a nice in depth read and review it is very welcome.

I wasn't planning on doing it, just trying to get a grasp on the protocol. I'll start writing more stuff for Dakka in the next few months, I'm still trying to learn my new job...

I picked this up at the weekend also and was pleasantly suprised biuy the changes (first one I have looked at since Battlefront took over).

They really have padded it out nicely.

My only problem with it was the free (?) FoW boxset with subscriptions which is very tempting.

That is causing me a big issue as well notprop - my german list is done with all models purchased, so cant justify any of the german boxes. All the US boxes are quit specific except the M10 box, and the British boxes would all require me to start a new Brit army which I dont want to do just yet. If they had a proper soviet box I'd get it in a heartbeat, but as it is I'm torn between the US M10s and the King Tiger Been trying to decide for 2 months now!

It is quite annoying lego, but does beg the question is an army ever really finished?

Personally the Airborne 17lbers are calling my name, but since I have had a half constructed Airborne company on the shelf since release this may either enthuse or collect dust? Tricky.
